On the morning of October 2, speaking to VNA reporters from the 17th TWAS Conference forum taking place from September 29 to October 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, former Deputy Director of the 108 Central Military Hospital, said that he and a Vietnamese female professor were officially recognized as Academicians of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) through the ceremony of receiving new members at the Conference.
Here, Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, former Deputy Director of the 108 Military Central Hospital and Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University were honored to receive the official academician recognition certificate of the World Academy of Sciences from Professor, Doctor of Science Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in the presence of more than 300 delegates who are scientists from all over the world.
Professor Nguyen The Hoang shared: "I am truly moved and proud to be honored as one of two Vietnamese scientists to become new academicians of TWAS. This is not only my personal honor but also a recognition of the persistent efforts of the Vietnamese scientific community over the past many years," Professor Nguyen The Hoang said emotionally.
"I believe that this title is not only a source of pride but also a great responsibility for me to continue to contribute to research, teaching and especially training the young generation - those who will continue the scientific path in the future. I also hope that my small success will inspire many Vietnamese scientists to be more confident, reach out to the world, and contribute to affirming Vietnamese intelligence and bravery on the global scientific map," Professor Nguyen The Hoang expressed.
Through TWAS, Professor Nguyen The Hoang hopes to expand international cooperation, connect scientists in the region and globally, share knowledge and apply scientific and technological advances to solve urgent challenges of humanity such as climate change, public health and sustainable development.
Previously, in a letter to Professor Nguyen The Hoang informing him of TWAS's decision, Professor, Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, wrote: "I am pleased to inform you that TWAS members have elected you as an official member of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries. This decision takes official effect from January 1, 2025."
In this election, TWAS elected 74 new academicians, the largest number of elected academicians in the history of TWAS.
Brazil and China are the two countries with the most new academicians (10 people), followed by India (9 people), Malaysia (7 people), South Africa (4 people), Bangladesh, Morocco, Pakistan (3 people each); Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt, the United States (2 people each)...
The decision of TWAS takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of members of this organization to 1,444 people.
Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, Deputy Director of 108 Central Military Hospital, was born in 1965, in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh.
He was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Vietnam in 2006; received a Doctor of Science degree in 2008 and an Associate Professor from the University of Munich in 2009. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Professor.
He is the main author of more than 100 research works published in domestic and international journals, chaired and participated in many scientific research projects at the State and Ministry levels.
His scientific research focuses mainly on the fields of neovascularization and cell culture, microsurgical free tissue flap transfer, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation.
In addition to many prestigious national and international scientific awards such as Vifotec, Nepomuc von Nussbaum, Karl-Max von Bauerfeind, APKO..., First and Third Class Labor Medals, in 2012, he received the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award from the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his exceptionally outstanding research works with scientific breakthroughs.
Also honored this time, Vietnam has Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974 in Mo Duc district, Quang Ngai province.
She graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City). She was recognized as an Associate Professor in 2014 and recognized as a Professor in 2020.
During her scientific research career, Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has focused on the field of drug discovery from Vietnamese medicinal herbs, contributing greatly to the development of the country's medical and pharmaceutical industry.
In particular, she has researched and applied, completed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs, and has more than 80 articles published in prestigious international scientific journals.
Her research team also received the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award in 2019 for their research on products from bees raised in Vietnam.
In 2021, she was honored to receive the Kovalevskaia Prize - a prestigious award honoring female scientists in the field of natural sciences./.
The World Academy of Sciences, abbreviated in English as TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences), is an international non-governmental organization under UNESCO, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries and representing about 130 scientific academies worldwide, including the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
TWAS was founded in 1983. Before 2004, the Institute was known as the Third World Academy of Sciences.
Today, TWAS is a scientific associate member of the International Science Council (ISC) and of the former International Council for Science (ICSU).
TWAS was officially recognized by United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in 1985./.
