According to the plan, in October 2025, Vietnam will host two important regional sports events: AMMS 8 (taking place from October 15-17) and SOMS 16 (taking place from October 13-15). This is the first time Vietnam has assumed the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN Sports Cooperation (AMMS 8) and the second time hosting SOMS, affirming the country's growing position on the regional sports map.
In addition, Vietnam also organized extended meetings with partners, including: AMMS + Japan (5th time) and AMMS + China (2nd time).
The conference is expected to be attended by international delegates including: Ministers/Deputy Ministers of Sports or Heads of Sports Agencies of ASEAN member countries and Timor Leste (ASEAN observer country), ASEAN senior officials on sports and sports representatives of ASEAN countries, Timor Leste; ASEAN Secretariat; delegations of Ministry leaders, senior officials in charge of sports of Japan and China; representatives of international organizations, relevant ASEAN dialogue countries.
Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet spoke at the meeting.
This year's conference took place with the theme: "Navigating Sports - Contributing to Sustainable Development" including contents related to sports development associated with science and sports economics such as: Discussion on sports science research, modern management models, sports economics and sports associated with tourism. Equality and inclusion in sports - promoting the participation of women, youth and people with disabilities in regional sports activities. Preserving traditional ASEAN sports - maintaining and promoting unique values, considering this as a common cultural identity of the region.
In addition, we aim to establish an ASEAN High Performance Sports Centre - a place to train athletes and coaches, share knowledge, and create a foundation to improve regional sports performance. Expand international cooperation, through a joint statement with Japan, China, and international organizations such as WADA, FIFA, IOC, etc. to promote sustainable sports development.
To successfully organize the two events, Vietnam established the Organizing Committee in May 2025, along with sub-committees on content, logistics, communications, and security. Up to now, the preparation work is entering the "sprint" stage. Some tasks such as: Choosing the venue, facilities, preparing reception, communications, and designing the event identity are basically completed.
Emphasizing the issues related to the above preparation work, at the working session, Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet requested: Subcommittees, departments, and units in charge that have been assigned tasks in advance, continue to speed up the progress in the fastest time. All must be ensured in the best preparation conditions to serve AMMS 8 and SOM 16 to achieve the expected results.
For communication work, photo exhibitions and accompanying activities serving AMMS 8 and SOM 16 need to be carefully and thoroughly prepared. Each photo displayed or promotional videos reflecting the event's activities must be strictly censored in both content and form... Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet emphasized.
Overview of the working session.
It can be said that with AMMS 8 and SOM 16, Vietnam is not only the host country, but also wants to contribute to shaping the ASEAN Sports Development Strategy in the coming period. The results obtained from this Conference are expected to create strong development prospects in the future. In particular, the main goals that the Conference aims for are to determine the ASEAN Sports Cooperation Framework for the period 2026 - 2035; strengthen the connection between Sports - Economy - Culture - Health in the region; put into operation the ASEAN High Performance Sports Center; lay the foundation for ASEAN to move towards a standardized SEA Games (focusing on Olympic sports groups) linked with the Olympics and major international tournaments.
The successful organization of these conferences is of great significance, an opportunity for host Vietnam to affirm its capacity to organize international events, expand cooperation in training athletes, coaches, and research on sports science; and enhance the prestige and position of Vietnam in the ASEAN community and the world.
