The world's women's volleyball queen changes hands after 7 years

On the evening of August 29, in the round of 16 of the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship, Serbia became the former champion after losing to the Netherlands.

Serbia has dominated the Women's Volleyball World Championship, winning it back-to-back in 2018 and 2022. They have shown signs of decline in recent years, but are still a very strong team.

However, not long into this year's tournament, the defending champion received bad news when star number 1 Tijana Boskovic suffered a serious injury. Her absence was the reason why Serbia dropped to second place in Group H and had to face the Netherlands (first in Group A) in the round of 16.

In fact, in terms of class, the Netherlands can hardly compare with Serbia. And what the two teams contributed on the evening of August 29 partly showed that. Serbia, when losing Boskovic, lost 50% of its strength.

However, they still made the Netherlands go through heart-stopping moments. In the first set, the Netherlands won with a hard-fought score of 27-25, 26-24.

But in the next two sets, Serbia rose strongly. With their rich experience, they won 25-22, 25-20 and tied the match 2-2.

This forced the match into a fifth set to decide the outcome. This was another set that Serbia continued to chase fiercely. However, their stamina gradually ran out after the effort to take the match into a fifth set. In the end, the Netherlands still won 15-11 to end the match.

With this defeat, Serbia was officially dethroned. This is an opportunity for the Women's Volleyball World Championship to find a new champion, after Serbia has held this title for the past 7 years.
