Angry Japanese volleyball fans advise men's team to 'study from women's team'

On many forums, Japanese volleyball fans expressed anger at the poor performance of the men's team at the 2025 World Championship, especially when compared to the women's team.

Japanese volleyball showed two contrasting faces in the women's and men's world championships - which took place just one week apart.

At the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship (ending on September 7), the Japanese team played extremely impressively, reaching the semi-finals.

Although they could not win any medals, the girls from the land of cherry blossoms made the volleyball world admire them when they played on par with Türkiye and Brazil - the strongest teams in the world.

Japan is also the only volleyball nation in Asia that is considered to be equal in both men and women. When the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship kicks off (from September 12), Japan is considered the 5th favorite to win the championship.

But in complete contrast to their female counterparts, the “samurai warriors” performed poorly. They lost both matches against Türkiye and Canada with a score of 0-3, worse than Libya - the team that won 1 game against both opponents.

This result caused Japan to be humiliatingly eliminated even though the tournament had only reached the second round. This was the worst performance of Japanese volleyball in the history of participating in world tournaments.

Famous for its flexible and resilient playing style, Japanese volleyball attracts a large number of fans. In most tournaments, they are always one of the most supported teams, especially when the tournament takes place in Asia.

Fans were also extremely angry with the performance of the Japanese volleyball boys. Many people advised them to "go study with the girls".

"What am I watching? Japanese male players trying to compete with Western teams? They should learn how the girls play," a fan commented on the Volleytrail fanpage.

On the tournament's YouTube channel, many Japanese volleyball fans were also dissatisfied with the lackluster play of Japanese athletes.

"They know clearly that they cannot overcome the tall opponent's barrier but still try to smash and smash. Look at how the Japanese girls overcome tall opponents," another fan said.

The fans' discontent was understandable. Japanese fans were ready to accept defeat, but were completely disappointed by their team's "common" tactics.

A typical image for comparison is the Ishikawa brothers. They are the "powerful" brother and sister pair of Japanese volleyball when the older brother Yuki is the captain of the men's team, and the younger sister Mayu is the captain of the women's team.

At the World Championship, Mayu was in the top 3 scorers of the tournament and was voted into the best team as a winger.

Yuki, who plays the same position as Mayu, has been considered a symbol of Japanese volleyball for nearly a decade. But in the recent loss to Canada, he was one of the worst players.
