'Being fast for 1 second can slow down many lives'

On the evening of November 19, in Hoa Binh province, the National Traffic Safety Committee coordinated with the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province to organize a memorial service for victims of traffic accidents with the message "Remembering those who left - For those who stay behind".

Attending the memorial ceremony were: Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Tran Luu Quang; Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang; leaders of Hoa Binh province; members of the National Traffic Safety Committee; relatives of the traffic accident victims and a large number of people.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh Province Bui Van Khanh said that the memorial ceremony is a humane and meaningful event to warn about traffic accidents and the risks of traffic accidents, thereby raising awareness and compliance with legal regulations when participating in traffic. The memorial ceremony is also an opportunity to share and call for help from the community for victims and their families who died in traffic accidents.

Appearing at the ceremony, Ms. Bui Thi Lan (residing in Huu Nghi ward, Hoa Binh city) sadly said that her daughter-in-law died after a traffic accident involving 2 cars and 1 motorbike that occurred at 2:30 a.m. on June 6, 2023.

Her daughter-in-law passed away, leaving behind two granddaughters, N. (12 years old) and H. (3 years old). Every day, the children’s father goes to work early, so Mrs. Lan has to be both grandmother and mother to take care of the two children. “Every time someone asks, N. cries. She just hugs her mother’s blue blanket,” Mrs. Lan said, choking up.

Continuing Mrs. Lan's words, little girl N. wiped away her tears and said: "I wish to study well so I can work and earn money to support myself and my siblings."

Speaking at the memorial service, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang shared that the stories we witnessed in today's program moved us and made us feel sorry for the unfortunate victims who passed away due to traffic accidents.

“The pain and loss their loved ones have endured is incomparable. We are all heartbroken by the fact that every day so many people leave their homes and never return.

Many people have been disabled for life and many happy, peaceful families suddenly fell into tragedy: husband and wife separated, parents lost children, children became orphans... just because of traffic accidents," said Minister Nguyen Van Thang.

The Minister of Transport said that in the first 10 months of this year, there were 9,826 traffic accidents nationwide, with 5,496 deaths and 6,973 injuries.

“These are heartbreaking figures that speak volumes and make us seriously reflect. The damage caused by traffic accidents has been negatively affecting the socio -economic development of our country. Many of us still feel insecure every time we start a journey...”, said Minister Nguyen Van Thang.

The Minister of Transport emphasized that this is an occasion to commemorate the unfortunate victims who died in traffic accidents, to share the pain and loss that their relatives had to endure, and at the same time, it is an opportunity for us to think and worry together to turn loss and pain into concrete actions to minimize and repel the pain caused by traffic accidents.

On behalf of the Government and the National Traffic Safety Committee, Minister Nguyen Van Thang requested Party committees, authorities, organizations and functional forces from the central to local levels to continue implementing more drastic solutions to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of ensuring traffic order and safety.

The Minister also called on everyone to be proactive, comply with traffic safety laws, and join hands in building a safe, civilized and humane traffic environment.

“We often see somewhere on the street the warning 'be one minute fast, be a lifetime slow', but in reality we need to remind each other 'be one second fast... can slow down many lives',” said Minister Nguyen Van Thang.

A representative of the National Traffic Safety Committee said this is the 12th year the event to commemorate victims of traffic accidents has been held.

On the occasion of the memorial service, the National Traffic Safety Committee calls on every Vietnamese person, for the sustainable development of the country, for the safety of themselves and the community, to voluntarily comply with traffic safety regulations to prevent traffic accidents: If you have drunk alcohol or beer - Do not drive; Obey the speed limit - Be fast for a minute, slow for a lifetime; Wear a helmet for your child - Be a devoted parent; Do not use the phone while driving; Wear a seat belt when driving; Drive in the correct lane, keep a safe distance...

Everyone should strictly obey traffic laws, voluntarily give way and help each other when participating in traffic to build a safe and civilized traffic environment.

During the memorial ceremony, the National Traffic Safety Committee presented standard helmets to 600 students in Hoa Binh province.
