Trains connecting Hanoi's heritage

Hanoi Department of Tourism has just coordinated with Vietnam Railway Corporation to organize a survey program and build railway tourism products running in the inner city and surrounding areas.

The surveyed locations are expected to form a new railway tourist route including: Hanoi Station, Long Bien Station, Gia Lam Station, Gia Lam Railway Factory and Co Loa Station.

The experience train with cultural activities runs from Hanoi station to Gia Lam station within the framework of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2023.

The surveyed locations are all located in the area connecting the cultural, historical and creative industrial spaces of the capital, which are expected to become the core of the new railway tourism product. This will be a connecting journey for visitors to fully experience the outstanding cultural heritages in Hanoi and some neighboring locations. Accordingly, on the rail journey, the stops will be built into cultural spaces with performances and experiences to tell the very unique stories of the destination.

According to the proposal of travel agencies, some types of services exploiting Hanoi culture such as folk art (xam, ca tru), cuisine (pho cuon, banh com, lotus tea) and handicraft stalls (Van Phuc silk, folk paintings) ... should be put on the train, thereby turning the train into a mobile cultural space. In addition, the railway industry should support the integration of selling tour packages including train tickets, accommodation, sightseeing; adjusting train schedules, opening relics to suit the schedule of passengers.

According to Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism Tran Trung Hieu, the railway lines around Hanoi not only serve transportation but can also become a cultural experience journey, where tourists explore the capital through each train station and each historical story. Hanoi tourism industry will closely coordinate with units to deploy this tour in the near future.

Currently, the railway industry is also researching to renovate stations such as Long Bien, Gia Lam, and Co Loa into cultural, exhibition, and event spaces; and at the same time, building a railway museum at the Gia Lam Railway Factory.

The urban railway tourist route and neighboring connections are expected to be a new journey to explore Hanoi. It is expected that the 2-storey tourist train named “Hanoi 5 city gates” will be launched on August 19 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2; 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day.
