On the morning of September 25, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) held a festival to welcome new students in 2025. Of the 4,000 new students admitted to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities this year, 78% are female and 22% are male. Compared to last year, the proportion of male students this year increased by 2%, demonstrating the growing interest of men in social sciences.

Valedictorian causes "storm on the internet" with 8.0 IELTS thanks to self-study

At the ceremony, Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said that in recent years, the rate of students having jobs in the first year after graduation has reached nearly 90%, of which 70-75% work in their major.

In a message to new students, Professor Phuong Lan said: "Do I choose a career or does the career choose me? In modern society, we must always be ready for both. Whether you have a clear direction in advance or the job comes unexpectedly, you need to prepare yourself with full knowledge and skills, so that we can be proactive in any situation."

The school's top student this year is Nguyen Hieu Nhan, majoring in English. This new student once caused a "storm on the internet" when he was a rural student, not an English major, did not take extra classes, but scored 8.0 on the IELTS with a 9.0 in listening on his first try, all thanks to self-study.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Hieu Nhan shared: "For me, the title of valedictorian is not the destination, but a reminder to always strive, be humble and persevere. Today's achievement is the motivation for me to continue to strive in the journey ahead, spending 4 years of university to practice not only knowledge but also skills and social experience."

She said that she used to be a self-conscious but competitive girl, but thanks to education and a dynamic, integrated university environment, Ly has changed herself to become a more confident and better listener. Therefore, she was brave enough to participate in the beauty pageant and bring home a high prize for herself.

Cam Ly shared: "As a student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, with the philosophy of 'Comprehensive Education - Liberal - Multicultural', I hope that everyone deserves to have access to a comprehensive education. Talking about education is talking about a very big problem, but the more people join hands, the greater the chance of achieving great things." That's why she started the Dream Bus project - Education Caravan with the desire to bring children in mountainous areas basic skills such as sex education.

“I think a community project should come from the heart and be sustainable,” she said.

The runner-up advised new students to believe in themselves because: "Everyone has their own light. The moon is reflected from the light of the sun. And although the light from the sun is extremely bright, that does not mean the moon is not bright in its own way."

By participating in the festival, new students can also experience many booths, check-in with photobooth and meet with club members. Especially, enjoy free sticky rice, interact with singer Vo Ha Tram and runner-up Do Cam Ly.
