Camera angles that touch the heart

Taking on many roles at the same time: A sharp writer of Lao Dong Newspaper in the field of culture and arts, a prestigious film critic, a photographer who has won many prestigious awards at home and abroad, a prestigious curator and judge in domestic photo contests... It can be said that the traveling, writing, and creativity of journalist and photographer Viet Van are very admirable.

Being a “family member”, Viet Van did not choose the path of “salon” journalism, but truly devoted himself to experiencing life, experiencing interesting moments; sharing images that breathe life, bringing human identity to the public. It is worth mentioning that if an artist takes on too many roles, sometimes he will be overwhelmed in one area. In the case of Viet Van, on the contrary, in every field he shows that he is knowledgeable and experienced.

This was explained by veteran photographer Quang Phung: “Viet Van reads a lot, thinks a lot, experiences a lot, researches a lot and is also a journalist. It is his constant improvement that makes Van’s photos have their own personality. Van’s photography style is also different from others. The perspective of a journalist and a photographer in Van support each other.”

What I like most when standing in front of Viet Van's works is that I feel like I am immersed in a spatial dimension that he designed and arranged in a completely natural way, but clearly seeing the composition of the pieces of light, objects, people, scenery...; carrying the intention of the creative subject and the central character of the work. From there, the work speaks up, has its own life and silently tells its own story, evoking the contemplation of different photo-enjoying subjects. This has become his consistent photographic style since the exhibition of the photo series "Religion and Life" (2006) and the photo series "Generals in Peacetime" reflecting the daily life of 12 generals (2009) until now.

That interesting style is not only in photography but also in each of his articles, whether in the form of simple reflections or portraits, character contributions, or essays containing high scientific content... Observant people will notice that behind each layer of text or layout of the article, there is a tight structure, content, depth and even polarized areas of light. He tries to use the polarizing lens of the camera, the filter of intelligence, the subtlety and magic of language and the empathy of the heart to capture human vibrations in his works.

Viet Van shared: “Holding a camera helps me perceive life around me in more dimensions and express my personal voice. Photography is a language without borders.” In more than 30 years of working, Viet Van has had 11 solo exhibitions, including the “My Mother” exhibition held at Photometria (Greece); participated in more than 50 group exhibitions in Asia, Europe and the US, including the “Fifth Exposure Annual Awards” exhibition held at the Louvre Museum (Paris, France); published 7 books on diverse topics. He has also won dozens of prestigious international photography awards and his works have been published in many famous photography publications on different continents.
