Veterans Association members of Chau Thanh commune and local people cleaned up, contributing to spreading awareness of environmental protection.
Small work, big effect
In Chau Thanh commune, Veterans Association members, together with local people, officials and civil servants, regularly collect water hyacinth and garbage along roads and rivers; clear bushes, unclog drains, plant flowers and take care of trees.
While working, they also reminded people not to litter, encouraged young people to limit gatherings that cause disorder; at the same time, they took the opportunity to explain the regulations on democracy at the grassroots level, and guided them on how to reflect their legitimate aspirations to the commune authorities. People listened and trusted because the words of those who were once "Uncle Ho's soldiers" always had the power to spread.
This is a regular activity of the Environmental Protection Club maintained by the Chau Thanh Commune Veterans Association for the past 5 years. The club has 21 members, meets once a month, and conducts a general cleaning campaign every two months.
Every year, the club collects 5-7 tons of waste, about 2 tons/year along Highway 61 and Highway 63 alone, and more than 3,000m of new flower paths are planted. In addition to improving the landscape, the model also raises public awareness and creates consensus in the community.
Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Chau Thanh Commune, Dinh Van Suu, said: “The members do not talk much, they just set an example. Over time, the results are clear, people believe and follow. This is a practical model, contributing to the locality in preserving the environment and building a sustainable new countryside.”
The economic model of veteran Nguyen Van Duc (Vinh Thong ward) effectively spread the movement "Veterans help each other reduce poverty and do good business".
Spreading the spirit of exemplary behavior
In Ta Keo Ngon quarter (Vinh Thong ward, An Giang province), Mr. Nguyen Van Duc (65 years old) affirmed that with the spirit of "Uncle Ho's soldiers", he always strives to overcome difficulties. Since 2016, he has been recognized as a veteran with good production and business at the provincial level.
In 1989, Mr. Duc received 10 hectares of land contaminated with alum and bare with weeds. The first few seasons were a series of failures, the rice was stunted, and the income was not enough to cover expenses, but he was not discouraged. He learned from friends, researched techniques, improved the soil, reduced the amount of seeds sown, and increased productivity. “It was very difficult, but I determined that only perseverance could change. Now the rice fields have traders coming to buy them, making it much less difficult,” Mr. Duc said.
From scratch, he now owns 150 hectares of land and rents another 300 hectares to grow high-quality rice. Around his house, he digs fish ponds, builds chicken and duck coops, and plants fruit trees, both saving costs and increasing income. Each year, his family earns more than 1 billion VND. But for him, the most valuable thing is being able to share his experiences to help other members rise up and contribute to the local new rural development program.
According to the Provincial Veterans Association, there are currently more than 11,000 members recognized as good producers and traders at all levels, contributing to reducing the rate of poor member households from 2.61% to 0.4%, eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses among members. This is a clear demonstration of the movement "Veterans help each other reduce poverty, do good business" being effective and spreading in many localities.
The above two stories are among hundreds of practical models of An Giang Veterans. In many places, veterans, along with the police and military , patrol at night to maintain security and order in hamlets or directly remind young people not to gather to drink and cause disorder.
Some people quietly donated land to widen roads, others transported bricks and mixed mortar to help build rural bridges. Many members also joined hands to build and repair hundreds of charity houses, and gave scholarships and bicycles to disadvantaged students.
Veterans are also always pioneers in social movements, such as: All people unite to build a cultural life, Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese products... so that the movement can truly spread in social life.
Presenting "Comradeship" houses to disadvantaged members, spreading the spirit of solidarity and sharing within the association.
Comrade Bui Vu Tan, Chairman of the Veterans Association of An Giang province, emphasized: The most important thing for the Veterans Association is to maintain the qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers", the tradition of "loyalty, solidarity, exemplary, and innovation" so that each member is truly a reliable support for the Party, government and people.
Models that are close to the people, from environmental protection, maintaining security and order to economic development, helping each other get rich are the ways the association contributes to protecting the Party's ideological foundation, strengthening the great solidarity bloc and building people's trust.
In the new period, the association continues to innovate its methods of operation, improve the quality of supervision and social criticism, and at the same time replicate practical models so that each veteran is not only a role model in the family and residential area, but also a nucleus of solidarity, an extended arm of the Party in the people, contributing to joining hands with the whole province to successfully implement the goal of building An Giang to develop sustainably, civilized and modern.
Over the past 5 years, the provincial Veterans Association at all levels has participated in more than 1,200 monitoring and inspections of grassroots democracy regulations; 1,153 members have participated in Party committees and 552 members have been elected to the People's Council. Members have repaired 182 bridges, built 214 km of new roads, and built 313 houses of gratitude worth more than 6.2 billion VND. In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 7,200 members participated in checkpoints and patrols, contributing nearly 778 million VND to epidemic prevention and control work... These results affirm that veterans are always a solid support for the Party, government and people. |
