Where "tuition" is smiles and dreams

Every weekend, the headquarters of the 4, 5, 6 neighborhoods (Phu Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) is always busier than usual. In the small room, the lecture of a special class called the Green Firefly Club - a place that accompanies many children to overcome difficulties - echoes.

From idea to reality

Having been involved in the Youth Union for many years, Mr. Nguyen Van Kieu (born in 1999, member of the Executive Committee of the Phu Thanh Ward Youth Union) realized that there are still some difficult areas, especially the boarding houses and residential areas of young workers. The pressure to make a living forces many people to work overtime, drive technology cars or do extra business after work, leaving little time to help their children study.

From that sympathy, Mr. Kieu cherished the idea of opening a class to support the children of young workers and disadvantaged children. After a period of preparation, in March 2022, the class began a trial operation under the name of the Green Firefly Club.

The special class of the Green Firefly Club accompanies many children overcoming difficulties.

In the early stages, the club faced many difficulties: lack of staff, little awareness, parents hesitant to send their children... "Love for children and the desire to create practical activities, close to the thoughts and aspirations of young workers after the Covid-19 pandemic urged us to persevere in finding solutions," said Mr. Nguyen Van Kieu.

Through many meetings, propaganda campaigns and the support of the Party Committee and the Ward People's Committee, the Club gradually stabilized and operated more systematically. On October 15, 2022, the Club was officially established with a clear organizational structure and expanded scale.

There are currently more than 60 teachers and volunteers teaching Math, Vietnamese, English and soft skills to 28 children. There, no one has to pay tuition, no one receives a salary, only volunteer hearts working together to nurture knowledge and dreams for the children of young workers and disadvantaged children.

Secretary of Phu Thanh Ward Youth Union Nguyen Thi Mai Phuong commented: "The effectiveness of the club is clearly shown through the smiles and progress of the children and the positive feedback from parents, party cell secretaries and neighborhood leaders."

Join hands and contribute

Nguyen Ngoc Lan Anh (born in 2006), in charge of the professional section, has been with the Club since the beginning. At that time, Lan Anh was still a high school student, participating with a supportive mindset. But the more she interacted with children, the more she loved children and was determined to study Educational Management at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Currently a second-year student, Lan Anh applies knowledge from the lecture hall and coordinates with teachers from primary schools to develop a teaching roadmap for the club. Classes are held regularly from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings.

During the summer, classes are held more often and soft skills training is added. Outside of class, the club also organizes extracurricular activities to help students expand their knowledge and gain practical experience.

From July 14 to August 14, Mr. Che Ma Kinh Lac (born in 2005, Chinese), a student at the University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology in Ho Chi Minh City and volunteers of the Green Summer campaign came to support the club. Although the time was not long, intimacy was quickly built through lively lessons, especially the English communication subject with interesting illustrations, helping to absorb effectively.

“The students always listen attentively to lectures, speak boldly and complete their homework. This is definitely an unforgettable memory for me,” Kinh Lac confided.

As soon as he finished work, Mr. Cao Tan Khoa (born in 1979, living on Tran Thu Do Street, Phu Thanh Ward) hurriedly stopped by the class to pick up his child. Looking at little Cao Thi Hong Anh diligently writing, he smiled slightly: "Thanks to this class, my child has made many friends, is more active and studies harder. My family is very appreciative and grateful."

Just like that, the Green Firefly Club has been steadily lighting up small dreams day by day. That is how young people quietly study and follow Uncle Ho’s teachings, contributing their minds to nurturing the next generation.

Accompanying children, young workers and children of young workers in difficult circumstances has always been a key task of Phu Thanh Ward Youth Union.

“Each caring activity not only brings joy and timely encouragement, but also contributes to creating a solid foundation for children to be confident, mature, and become useful citizens,” said Secretary of the Ward Youth Union Nguyen Thi Mai Phuong.

Many activities have been implemented such as awarding “Pink Smile” scholarships, donating school supplies, opening summer review classes, etc. In the coming time, Phu Thanh Ward Youth Union will continue to mobilize diverse social resources to maintain and expand scholarship programs, free classes, and creative spaces for children.

At the same time, organize experiences and career guidance; apply technology to connect and support online learning, helping students access new knowledge and skills.
