Barcelona women's star Aitana Bonmati has made history by becoming the first player to win the women's Ballon d'Or three times in a row. The Spanish midfielder continues to dominate women's football with brilliant achievements with Barcelona and the national team.

In history, only two names have ever done the same thing in the men's category when Lionel Messi won 4 consecutive Ballon d'Ors (2009-2012) and French legend Michel Platini with 3 consecutive times (1983-1985). This helps Bonmati enter the rare group of legends of world football.
Speaking after receiving the award from the legendary Andres Iniesta, Bonmati shared: “This is the third time in a row that I have been honored here. I cannot believe that I can do this. I thank France Football magazine for this award.
I think it was a year that saw a lot of quality players, especially my teammates. I am very happy to receive the award from Iniesta, my idol since I was a child. I learned a lot from him and Xavi to get to where I am today. I will always be grateful because their football has helped me a lot. Thank you to two great players for what they have done for the world of football.
I owe a lot to FC Barcelona. This is the club of my life. I hope to receive this award for many more years to come.”
Despite being considered the number one candidate, Bonmati’s victory this time was not as overwhelming as the previous two times. Barcelona Women’s Club still dominates the domestic competition with a treble of titles, but the team also lost two matches in the Spanish Women’s Championship, equaling the total number of defeats in the previous five seasons combined.

After a long spell in the centre of the park following a hamstring injury to Alexia Putellas, Bonmati faced stiff competition this season when his close teammate returned. However, the pair still managed to score and assist 10 or more goals between them, helping Barcelona reach the Champions League final for the fifth consecutive year. However, their dream of defending the title was shattered when they unexpectedly fell to Arsenal 1-0 in Lisbon.
Bonmati also experienced further heartache with the Spanish national team when she missed a penalty in the shootout in the final of the 2025 Women’s European Championship, which led to La Roja losing to England. But the fact that she was on the pitch was a testament to her extraordinary willpower.
Just weeks before the tournament, the 27-year-old midfielder was treated in hospital for viral meningitis. She returned in time, coming on in the group stages and quickly regained her starting place. Bonmati scored the only goal in the semi-final against Germany and was voted Player of the Tournament.
In the bitter moments after the final, Bonmati was still frank: “I was really shocked. We gave everything. I have to apologize for missing the penalty and congratulate England.”
The third consecutive Ballon d'Or award is a worthy recognition of Aitana Bonmati's talent, will and unyielding fighting spirit. She deserves to be a new monument in the history of women's football.
