The capsule hotel model first appeared in Osaka (Japan) in 1979, according to Daily Mail. The sleeping pods are so small that many people think of them as coffins. However, nearly half a century later, the model that was once just a cheap, convenient place to stay in Japan has now spread all over the world .

The world's largest capsule hotel has just opened in London, England, called Zedwell Piccadilly Circus. There are nearly 1,000 "pods", with a rental price of about 30 Euro/night (equivalent to 920,000 VND). The hotel is located in a prime location in the heart of the bustling West End, right next to Piccadilly Circus subway station.

Although she had once vowed never to stay overnight in this type of hotel, Jo Kessel - a British female traveler and journalist - gradually became curious, wondering if she could adapt to life inside the "cocoon". This prompted her to register to rent a room.

Outside the hotel are bright lights and trendy billboards, but inside it is quiet.

Many people think that this place mainly attracts young people and backpackers . However, according to Jo Kessel's observations, the accommodation is much more diverse. From elegant businessmen in neat suits to luxurious ladies, dressed from head to toe in designer clothes, also choose to stay here.

The sleeping pods are arranged in a dormitory style, but the view inside surprised journalist Jo Kessel. The entire space is paneled in light oak, giving a warm and sophisticated feeling. The mattresses, pillows and bed sheets are all soft and of good quality, creating a comfortable feeling when resting.

Each pod is about 2.2m long and 1m wide, enough room for one person to lie down comfortably. Inside, there are hooks, charging sockets and mirrors, but no TV - true to the hotel's motto: "This is for sleeping, not for entertainment."

However, Jo Kessel cautions that passengers should not kneel or sit upright in the cabin because the ceiling is quite low. For large suitcases, guests can rent private lockers outside. The shared shower, washroom and toilet areas are kept clean, modern and shiny.

As she drew the curtains, locked the door, and braced herself for the claustrophobic feeling, Jo was surprised to find the inside of the sleeping compartment warm and comfortable.

The only downside, she said, was that there was no private bathroom, so guests should limit their water intake at night. After reading a few pages of a book, Jo fell asleep without realizing it. The cabin's soundproofing system worked really well.

The hotel does not serve breakfast, as there are countless restaurants and cafes across the street for guests to choose from. According to Jo Kessel, with such a prime location, the price of more than 900,000 VND/night is a "bargain", especially when neighboring hotels cost up to 400 Euro/night (about 12.3 million VND).

If you don’t live in London – a city that is notoriously expensive – a night here is cheaper than a taxi or train home, making it a great option for short breaks or weekends.

The hotel is currently fully booked until the end of October. For those who are afraid of small spaces, a “capsule hotel” may not be the ideal choice. But for Jo Kessel, all prejudices have changed. Having once affirmed that she “would never stay here”, she is now ready to return for another peaceful night’s sleep in a “cocoon” in the heart of London.
