Dau Dang "4 no" hamlet

Dau Dang Hamlet (Ban Cam Village, Nam Mau Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan Province) is one of the hamlets completely isolated from the surrounding area because of the Nang River flowing through it.

Dau Dang hamlet has "4 no's" with only 15 households living with about 60 people, all of whom are Tay ethnic people, with difficult economic conditions, mainly relying on agricultural production and fishing on the river.

However, agricultural production here depends mainly on the weather. Especially in the rainy season, floodwaters from the river rise, inundating trees and crops, affecting food production.

The infrastructure here is lacking in many things, the village has no electricity, no roads, no schools, no clean water, and no internet.

Mr. Nong Van Tham (Dau Dang hamlet, Ban Cam village, Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan province) said: "My family currently has 4 members. The living conditions of the people here are extremely difficult with many poor and near-poor households.

Because there is no electricity, we have to use solar-powered devices. However, the usage time cannot be extended."

According to Mr. Tham, because there are no roads, people who want to travel to other localities have to go by boat, which takes a lot of time.

It takes 2.5 hours to get from Dau Dang hamlet to Ba Be district center. Children going to kindergarten and primary school must go by boat, spending an hour to get to school. For those who want more convenient transportation, their families must send them to study outside the district center.

"Because there is no road, when we catch fish, we cannot bring it to the district market to sell, we can only sell it on the spot. The cost of traveling by boat is very high, if we bring it to the market to sell, after deducting the cost of transportation, we will not make a profit" - Mr. Tham said.

Ms. Dong Thi Slay (Dau Dang hamlet, Ban Cam village, Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan province) confided that her family has 4 members including husband, wife and two sons.

Before, when her children were still in school, because there was no way to travel, her family had to send them to Na Hang, Tuyen Quang to study. Now the children are working in other districts in the province, so the hardship is somewhat less.

Ma Thi Huong's family (Dau Dang hamlet, Ban Cam village, Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan province) has 4 members but all the children go to school far from home, Ms. Huong's husband also goes to work far away, only she stays at home to take care of the farm work and catch more shrimp and fish to sell. Her children are all obedient, good students, both of them are preparing to study abroad so even though life is difficult, she still feels happy.

Potential for tourism development

Besides the above difficulties, Dau Dang hamlet has many advantages in tourism development such as being located next to the Nang River with fresh and cool air. In addition, there is also Dau Dang waterfall formed from the Nang River, blending with the primeval forest landscape of Ba Be National Park, very suitable for developing experiential tourism.

The waterfall falls from above, collides with the rocks, creating a rumbling sound that can be heard far away. Even standing several kilometers away, you can still hear this impressive sound clearly. Because of this attraction, Dau Dang waterfall has become a tourist destination that attracts many visitors.

Taking advantage of these advantages, people in the area have developed business services, trading a number of items such as food, drinks, products from fishing such as shrimp, fish, natural products of local people such as honey, herbal medicine... to increase family income.

Mr. Nong Van Tham said that in previous years, people also developed services such as food and accommodation for tourists when they came to visit and experience here. On peak days, there were about 200 visitors per day. However, due to the lack of facilities and lack of electricity, it has greatly affected the accommodation and attraction of tourists to this place. This year, the number of visitors to this area has decreased significantly, greatly affecting the income of the people.

Faced with these difficulties, the people hope to receive attention and support to invest in building roads and bringing electricity to the area. From there, it will help people easily develop production and trade goods, create momentum to promote tourism development, increase income, and contribute to reducing the poverty rate.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dong - Chairman of Nam Mau Commune People's Committee said that because many villages in the commune (including Dau Dang hamlet and Ban Cam village) have complex terrain and scattered population, bringing national grid electricity to these areas is difficult.

Besides, because the villages (including Dau Dang hamlet and Ban Cam village) are completely isolated from the surrounding area, investing in road construction is very difficult and requires a large amount of funding.

In 2022, after receiving the commune's proposal, Ba Be Electricity also coordinated with the commune to conduct a survey in Dau Dang hamlet, but due to the high cost, the locality had to wait for funding from above to be able to implement.

According to Mr. Dong, the investment capital demand has been registered under the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority Mountainous Areas Phase I (2021 - 2025), including the need to invest in the power grid as well as build and renovate rural traffic works in highland villages. However, due to the large capital source, it will have to wait until the next phase to be implemented.
