Los Angeles is a Democratic-controlled city that has repeatedly clashed with President Donald Trump on federal issues.
Speaking at the White House on August 5, President Trump affirmed that the task force will coordinate closely with the federal government to "ensure the Olympics take place safely, smoothly and are a historic success."

President Trump will serve as commander-in-chief of the task force, while Vice President JD Vance will serve as deputy commander.
The group also includes many senior officials in the cabinet and security agencies such as the FBI, Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security. President Trump emphasized that the US is ready to deploy additional National Guard or military forces if necessary to protect the biggest sporting event on the planet.
The decision was made by Mr. Trump in the context of the city of Los Angeles speeding up preparations for the first Olympics held in the US since 1996. Negotiations between the city government and the 2028 Olympic Organizing Committee on the use of personnel, especially the police force, are being described as "tense and pivotal".

At the White House task force announcement, Casey Wasserman, chairman of the 2028 Olympic Organizing Committee, expressed his support for the federal government. "The president has supported us and helped us every step of the way. We wouldn't be here without him," Wasserman said.
Mr. Wasserman also gave President Trump samples of the gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded at the 1984 Olympics, the last time Los Angeles hosted the event.
At the same time, he invited the president to once again participate in the Olympic torch relay as he did in New York before the opening of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
"For the first time in history, the Olympic torch will travel through all 50 states in the United States. If Mr. Trump wants to run the torch on Park Avenue again to recreate history, we are always happy to welcome him," he said.
The National Guard will be called into action as needed.
In addition to the 2028 Olympics, Mr. Trump's second presidential term will also see the 2026 FIFA World Cup, giving him more opportunities to shape the country's image and influence through global sporting events.
Notably, Mr. Trump also reiterated his tough stance on transgender athletes. "The United States will not let men win women's medals at the 2028 Olympics," he declared, while also pledging to have "very rigorous" genetic testing for all athletes.
