NHK reported that the Japanese parliament voted on October 1 to elect Ishiba Shigeru as prime minister, succeeding Kishida Fumio.
Mr Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leads a coalition that controls both houses of parliament.
Lawmakers congratulated Mr. Ishiba Shigeru on becoming Prime Minister of Japan on October 1.
The 67-year-old politician has held many cabinet positions, including Minister of Defense of Japan.
Ishiba Shigeru was elected LDP leader last week after former Prime Minister Kishida announced in August that he would not run for re-election amid party fundraising scandals.
On October 1, Mr. Kishida's cabinet resigned to prepare for the next government. Mr. Ishiba is expected to announce a new cabinet on the same day. Previously, he said he would dissolve the House of Representatives to hold early elections on October 27.
Former Defense Minister Iwaya Takeshi will become the new foreign minister while former Defense Minister Nakatani Gen will be appointed to his old post again, Kyodo News reported.
Hayashi Yoshimasa, former Prime Minister Kishida's chief cabinet secretary, will continue in the same position. Former health minister Kato Katsunobu will become finance minister. Mr. Hayashi and Mr. Kato both ran for the LDP leadership last week.
