The only iron ferry to the mainland broke down, forcing thousands of people on Tam Hai island commune (Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province) to struggle to travel by motorboat.

The leaders of the People's Committee of Tam Hai Commune (Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam Province) confirmed that the only iron-hulled ferry connecting Tam Hai Island Commune with the mainland was damaged this morning (November 8). The incident has disrupted the lives and work of the local people.

Accordingly, early in the morning of November 8, the iron ferry that regularly operates on the Tam Quang - Tam Hai route, the main means of transportation for 10,000 people in Tam Hai island commune, was damaged.

The incident happened at the exact time when people on the island commune of Tam Hai needed to go to the mainland to go to work, causing hardship for the people. Hundreds of people had to squeeze onto fishing boats to get to shore.

By the afternoon of the same day, at the ferry terminal on the Truong Giang River connecting Tam Quang commune and Tam Hai island commune, there was only one motorboat carrying people back and forth.

The small wooden boat had a low capacity so it could only carry groups of about 10 people at a time. Goods transported to the ferry dock were congested.

Tam Hai commune residents hope the government will soon build a new ferry so that people can travel more conveniently.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Hung, Chairman of Tam Hai Commune People's Committee, said that the iron ferry's breakdown was unavoidable because it had been in operation for too long. The commune still has a spare wooden ferry, but it is being sent for inspection.

Mr. Hung added that the iron ferry is currently being repaired and will be operational again in 3 days at the earliest.

Last September, the People's Committee of Nui Thanh district decided to approve the investment project to build two new passenger ferries to Tam Hai island.

Accordingly, two newly built ferries with a capacity equivalent to 30 tons will ensure the transport of passengers, motorbikes, rudimentary vehicles, cars and some other vehicles across the Truong Giang River, on the Tam Quang - Tam Hai route.

The total investment cost for the two ferries is nearly 25 billion VND, invested by Tam Hai Commune People's Committee and implemented in the period of 2024 - 2026.

According to Mr. Hung, the project to build two new ferries has just been approved by the district and is currently completing procedures to submit to the relevant authorities, opening a plan to select a contractor to build the ferries. It is expected to be put into use by the end of 2025.
