At the invitation of the Government and the National Elections Authority (NEA), the delegation will assess and report on the presidential election process in the country.

The AU-COMESA delegation was led by former Ugandan Vice President Specioza Wandira Kazibwe and COMESA Elders Committee member Ambassador John O. Kakonge.

The delegation includes 70 short-term observers who are ambassadors appointed by the African Union (AU), members of civil society organizations, election officials and experts, as well as African human rights experts.

These observers will be deployed to 16 of Egypt's 25 governorates.

The 2024 Egyptian presidential election sees a race between four candidates, including incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Chairman of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party Farid Zahran, Chairman of the Al Wafd Party Abdel-Sanad Yamama and Chairman of the Republican People's Party Hazem Omar.

The four candidates have all laid out their visions for improving people’s lives over the next six years. The NEA is expected to announce the final results of the election on December 18, if the results show that no second round is needed.
