Launching the first Vietnamese - Chinese literature translation contest

The first Vietnamese - Chinese, Chinese - Vietnamese literature translation contest, coordinated by Chibooks and related units, has been officially launched.

The contest was held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-China diplomatic relations, and at the same time, responding to the Vietnam-China Humanities Year. This is an activity of academic and cultural significance, contributing to creating a playground for students, international students, and young translators who love literature and language.

This is also an opportunity to improve literary translation skills, nurture love of literature, and contribute to promoting the literary image of the two countries to a wide range of readers at home and abroad.

The contest's participants include: students majoring in Chinese in Vietnam; Chinese students studying Vietnamese; Vietnamese students studying in China; and freelance translators capable of translating Vietnamese - Chinese.

Candidates will choose to translate contemporary poetry or short stories (no more than 1,000 words) from the list of works provided by the Organizing Committee. Entries will be evaluated according to three criteria: accuracy, coherence and literary value. Outstanding works will be introduced on the media channels of universities and writers' associations of the two countries.

The list of entries for the Vietnamese-Chinese translation contest (for Chinese contestants) includes famous works of Vietnamese literature such as: “ Green Bamboo (Nguyen Duy), “ Waves (Xuan Quynh), “ Little Spring (Thanh Hai), “ Walking in the Tram Blossom (Hoai Vu), “ The First Leaf (Hoang Nhuan Cam), “ Urbanization Diary (Mai Van Phan), “ Green Lotus (Son Tung), “ Melody of Time (Trinh Bich Ngan)...

The Chinese-Vietnamese translation contest entries (for Vietnamese contestants) include many poems and essays by famous contemporary Chinese poets and writers.

The prize structure includes 2 First Prizes, 4 Second Prizes, 4 Third Prizes and 10 Consolation Prizes with a total prize value of nearly 40 million VND.

The submission period is from September 22 to November 10, 2025. The jury will judge the entries from November 10 to 20. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 21, 2025 at HUFLIT and Beijing Foreign Studies University in a combination of in-person and online formats.

The jury brings together prestigious writers, translators, lecturers and language experts from Vietnam and China. The contest promises to become a bridge connecting Vietnamese and Chinese literature, and at the same time an opportunity for the young generation to affirm their translation ability and explore the depth of culture through language.
