The Saudi Arabian Heritage Commission said on September 25 that it had discovered the oldest known Stone Age urban settlement in the Arabian Peninsula, at the Musaywin site in the northwest of the Tabuk region.
According to a VNA correspondent in the Middle East-North Africa, the committee added that this settlement dates back to about 11,000-10,300 years ago (pre-ceramic Neolithic period), and was once an early cultural center of Tabuk.
Important finds at the settlement include stone-built dwellings, a collection of cut stones, stone mills used to grind plants and grains, ornaments made from seashells, sea snails and gemstones, remains of raw materials used to produce everyday tools and jewelry, as well as human remains and animal bones that help to date the settlement.
These findings were carried out by the Heritage Committee in collaboration with Kanazawa University (Japan) and the Neom urban project, which began in December 2022 and was published in the Asian Journal of Paleopathology. The Neom urban project is being built in Tabuk.
The Musaywin site has been listed in the National Antiquities Register, a digital database managed by the commission to record and preserve the country's archaeological and historical sites since 1978./.
