On September 30, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 3479/QD-BVHTTDL sending the film Red Rain by director Dang Thai Huyen, produced by the People's Army Cinema, to participate in the preliminary round of the 98th Oscars .
This is a special event, affirming the integration efforts of Vietnamese cinema on the world's largest cinema playground.
The film "Red Rain" participated in the preliminary round of the 98th Oscars.
Previously, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a Decision to establish a National Council for Film Selection to participate in the Oscars preliminary round for the 2025-2026 term. The Council consists of 5 members who are prestigious managers, artists, directors, producers, screenwriters and the Chairman of the Council is Mr. Dang Tran Cuong - Director of the Department of Cinema.
As a result, the film Red Rain has been highly trusted to represent Vietnam in the preliminary round of the Oscars this year.
Over the past three decades, many Vietnamese films have been submitted to the International Feature Film category at the Oscars, such as Ao Lua Ha Dong (2006), I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass (2016), Hai Phuong (2019), Dao, Pho and Piano (2024). Although they have not won any awards, these appearances have been important milestones, helping Vietnamese films become more widely known in the international arena.
"Red Rain" became the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time.
Red Rain is based on the work of the same name by writer Chu Lai, directed by Dang Thai Huyen, set in the fiery summer of 1972. When the liberation army recaptured Quang Tri, the US and the Republic of Vietnam army launched a fierce counterattack to retake the citadel, with the goal of gaining an advantage at the negotiating table.
The story revolves around Cuong (Do Nhat Hoang) - a music student who gave up the opportunity to study abroad to join the army. Cuong fights in a squad consisting of Ta, Binh, Tu, Hai, Sen - soldiers from many different regions, with different personalities but the same ideal of peace.
Each battle gradually depleted the army, leaving behind haunting footage: Images of soldiers buried in the ground, their bodies no longer intact, or scenes of crossing rivers that brought tears to the audience. The image of "red rain" is a metaphor for the losses.
Before leaving theaters on September 29, the film reached 8.1 million viewers with a total revenue of more than 710 billion VND. This is an unprecedented record in Vietnamese cinema, especially for revolutionary war films. This number is even more meaningful when the film is inspired by 81 days and nights of fighting in the ancient citadel of Quang Tri.
According to the Department of Cinema, the film Red Rain continues this journey with new expectations, not only contributing to promoting the image of the country, people and history of Vietnam, but also enhancing the position of the country's cinema on the world cinema map.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on March 15, 2026.
