PSG destroy Atletico Madrid in FIFA Club World Cup opening match

TPO - Champions League champion PSG had an impressive start to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup when they defeated Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl (USA) in the early morning of June 16 (Vietnam time).

Vitinha was the best player of the match.

This was PSG's first official match since their resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31. Under the scorching midday sun in California, coach Luis Enrique and his team continued to show their destructive form against another formidable representative of European football.

Right from the first minutes, PSG completely controlled the game. In the 19th minute, Fabian Ruiz opened the score with a dangerous long-range shot, giving Jan Oblak no chance to block. Right in the first half's injury time, Vitinha doubled the gap by penetrating the penalty area and finishing coolly after a quick counter-attack.

Atletico had a chance to reduce the score when Griezmann faced Donnarumma, but the Italian goalkeeper made an excellent save. In the second half, Julian Alvarez put the ball in the PSG net but the goal was disallowed because VAR determined that Koke had been at fault in the previous situation.

Atletico's frustrations mounted as defender Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute after a second yellow card. Just minutes later, Alexander Sorloth shot wide despite an open goal, leaving coach Diego Simeone slumped to the ground in despair.

PSG won convincingly.

PSG took advantage to score two more goals in the final minutes. Youngster Senny Mayulu scored in the 87th minute, before Lee Kang-in sealed the 4-0 win with a penalty in injury time.

Speaking after the match, coach Luis Enrique could not hide his satisfaction: "Every player showed their best qualities. I am very proud of today's performance."

“We controlled the whole game,” said Man of the Match Vitinha. “It was difficult playing in such hot weather, but the team played together. The hardest thing was to maintain our form, and that’s what we always aim for.”

With a big win on the opening day, PSG sent a strong warning to the rest of the tournament and affirmed their ambition to conquer the first FIFA Club World Cup title in history.
