Roblox updates content and feature restrictions for users under 13

Roblox is making a number of changes to limit the content accessible to users under 13 and increase parental controls.

According to The Verge, after many reports showed that the Roblox platform did not effectively protect children, the company has made a series of important adjustments, especially for users under 13 years old. In an email from Roblox to user families, these changes will limit access to inappropriate content and provide more tools for parents to manage their children's activities.

Roblox has faced strong criticism regarding the protection of children on the platform. In July, Bloomberg published a major report on predators on the platform. In August, Turkey blocked access to Roblox, saying it was a necessary measure to protect children. At the same time, the company announced that it would open an office in Turkey if the ban was lifted.

New controls help parents manage children's accounts

In the upcoming changes, users under 13 will need parental permission to access certain chat features. For users under 9, parental consent will be required to play games labeled "moderate content," which contain elements like mild violence or crude humor. These are adjustments that are intended to give parents more control over the content their children are exposed to. The company previously announced it would be switching from an "experience guide" system to content labels, which will better classify the type of content in games.

Additionally, Roblox will also launch a new account type that allows parents to directly manage their children's accounts. With this new account, parents can link their accounts to their children's, making it easier to control settings like daily usage time or Roblox friends list. However, some current features will be limited: parents will not be able to set a PIN to change accounts, or block child accounts from sending in-game messages, or limit children to all-ages games.

According to Roblox spokesperson Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt, these updates are part of the company's commitment to ensuring that the Roblox platform is a safe online environment for users, especially children. She added that the company will provide more information about these changes next month.

Roblox also sent out an email detailing changes to parental controls and content labels to parents. In the email, the company emphasized that the changes will be implemented next month, including replacing the current parental PIN system with accounts with special permissions. Users under 13 will need parental consent to access some chat features and games with "moderate" content.

With growing pressure from the public and regulators, Roblox is trying to improve its content moderation and parental controls system, aiming to protect child users from potential dangers on the platform.
