South Korea tests centimeter-accurate positioning system without internet

On September 30, the South Korean government announced that it will conduct a trial of the G-VRS location service in October. The trial will open registration for 300 people from October 1.

The new G-VRS system is developed based on GPS platform and does not need Internet connection to operate.

The current GPS service itself does not require an Internet connection to function. However, only when connected to the Internet can the Reference Station (VRS) system of popular devices provide more accurate locations.

Overcoming that drawback, G-VRS can operate effectively in areas with poor and unstable Internet connections such as remote islands, on mountains, even when moving at high speed.

According to the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII), the new G-VRS system is designed to complement the existing VRS system.

According to NGII, G-VRS can also be applied in many other fields by using information from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNNS). Typical examples include delivery, pest control by drones and autonomous driving.

NGII noted that the G-VRS system provided accuracy comparable to VRS in a "real combat" environment.

GNSS control points have been installed across South Korea, including four on Jeju Island and one on Gageodo Island off the southwest coast.

South Korea plans to install more sites on four other islands, including Ulleungdo, an island 120km off the east coast of South Korea. By the end of this year, there will be 103 GNSS sites across the country.
