The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has just coordinated with the People's Committee of Nghe An province to announce the Vinh International Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Accordingly, Vinh International Airport is oriented to be an airport for both civil and military purposes, meeting level 4E standards according to ICAO regulations.

During the 2021-2030 period, the airport is planned with a capacity of 8 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year.

By 2050, the capacity will be increased to 14 million passengers and 35,000 tons of cargo per year, becoming a modern aviation center of the North Central region.

Regarding technical infrastructure, the airport will be comprehensively expanded, in which the existing runway will be extended to 3,000 m x 45 m. By 2050, a second runway 02-20 will be built to the east, allowing for the parallel operation of two runways.

The taxiway and apron system is also invested synchronously with 3 parallel taxiways, connecting routes, modern rapid exits, and at the same time, the apron will be expanded to 29 aircraft parking positions by 2050.

Regarding the passenger terminal, the existing T1 terminal will be expanded, increasing its capacity to 5 million passengers/year. In addition, the new T2 terminal will be built in the area between the two runways, with an initial capacity of 3 million passengers/year and will be expanded to 9 million passengers/year by 2050, bringing the total capacity of the entire port to 14 million passengers/year.

For goods, the port will maintain the existing cargo terminal and build a new terminal north of Terminal T1, with a capacity of 25,000 tons/year and increase to 35,000 tons/year by 2050.

The consulting unit's explanatory report on Vinh International Airport's planning clearly states that in recent years the port has grown rapidly in both passengers and cargo, but the infrastructure system has not kept up.

The CHC, taxiway and apron made of asphalt concrete have exceeded their 10-year design life and show many damages such as cracks and wheel marks, affecting flight operations.

Passenger Terminal T1, put into use by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) in 2015 with a capacity of 2 million passengers/year, has served 2.64 million passengers in 2022 - exceeding its design capacity. ACV is implementing a project to renovate and upgrade Terminal T1 to increase its total capacity to 3 million passengers/year.

However, the current maintenance and repair work is only temporary. The progress of investment in new projects is still slow, partly due to the procedures for handing over defense land according to Decree 167/2017/ND-CP. Many essential items such as aircraft parking lots and Terminal T2 have not yet been implemented.

With its large scale and long-term vision, Vinh International Airport is expected to become a key aviation - logistics center of the North Central region, directly connecting with the North - South expressway, coastal route and Cua Lo port, forming a strategic traffic network, promoting regional economic development.

Previously, Vinh International Airport had been closed since July for repairs. According to the plan, 3 upgrade projects at Vinh Airport have a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND. ACV committed to synchronously completing the entire project before December 30.

Vinh Airport was put into operation at the end of 2003, with a designed capacity of 2.75 million passengers/year, currently having 21-26 flights arriving and departing each day. In July 2023, the airport had to stop operating for nearly 16 hours due to runway damage.
