Several grain trains derailed in the Simferopol region, Crimea’s regional capital, Sergey Aksyonov said on May 18. There were no casualties.

Rail traffic along the Simferopol-Sevastopol route was suspended following the incident. Crimean officials said the regional transport authority was deploying backup bus routes.

"As of 10 a.m. on May 18 (local time), according to preliminary information, about eight train cars have derailed. Bus transportation will be organized for passengers," said the head of Crimea's transport agency, Nikolay Lukashenko.

Crimean Railways said the freight train derailed due to outside interference. Earlier, on Telegram, sources close to Russian authorities said an explosive device caused the incident, creating a 15-meter-diameter crater on the track.

The Kremlin has not yet confirmed that the train derailment was caused by an explosive device. Mr. Sergey Aksyonov also said that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) is investigating the incident.

In early May, explosive devices derailed two Russian freight trains in the Bryansk region, close to the Ukrainian border, on two consecutive days.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014. Recently, Russia has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian military of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack infrastructure on the peninsula. However, Kiev has not accepted responsibility for these incidents.
