Phu Tho General Hospital has just announced that it has received and treated a patient with deformed joints in the hands and feet due to gout.

According to the patient, more than 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with gout. Because he was a long-distance driver, he often traveled a lot, ate and drank irregularly, and took medication irregularly, plus he did not go for regular check-ups, so the disease became more and more serious.

"At first, my joints, especially my toes, feet, fingers, and elbows were aching. I took medicine but it didn't help. When I saw tumors growing larger and larger in my joints, it made it difficult for me to do daily activities like holding things and walking, so I went to the hospital for treatment," said Mr. T.

Dr. Vi Truong Son, head of the Department of Urology (Phu Tho General Hospital) said that gout is a common disease nowadays and is on the rise. The disease is caused by a disorder of uric acid metabolism in the body.

Factors that increase the risk of gout: Eating foods rich in protein (seafood, animal organs, eggs, etc.);

Regular use of stimulants, drinking alcohol; Overweight, obesity; Kidney and cardiovascular disease; Family history of gout.

Subjectivity can easily lead to serious complications.

According to Dr. Son, when gout is detected without proper treatment and diet, the long-term progression can cause complications such as arthritis, joint deformities due to the deposition of urate crystals forming masses at the joints of the toes, fingers...

This affects the mobility of joints, affects the quality of life, and even in many cases, fractures, infections, destroyed joints and bones, osteomyelitis requiring amputation, and sepsis that endangers life.

In Mr. T's case, he discovered the disease more than 10 years ago but did not go for regular check-ups and treatment, nor did he adjust his diet according to the doctor's instructions, resulting in deformed limbs as above.

Doctors recommend that people need to have regular health check-ups to screen for potential diseases; when a disease is detected, it is necessary to follow the treatment regimen as well as the doctor's instructions on diet, exercise and regular check-ups.

Diet for people with gout

According to the instructions of Phu Tho General Hospital, people with gout should eat foods containing less than 50% purine such as lean pork, chicken breast, eggs, low-fat milk should only account for 10% of the total protein value of the meal.

Limit eating meat, shrimp, and fish: People weighing under 50kg can eat 100g; People weighing ≥ 60kg can eat no more than 150g.

Increase herbal foods that help eliminate uric acid from the blood such as cherries, strawberries, green mustard, oranges, and sake leaves.

Fatty foods that should be used by people with gout are: olive oil, peanut oil, sesame oil. Limit or avoid using soybean oil, sunflower oil, fried foods, and foods high in animal fat.

Starch and carbohydrate-rich foods are important foods for gout patients because they contain a safe amount of purine. They have the function of reducing and dissolving uric acid in urine. Therefore, starches are often recommended to be used as: noodles, pho, vermicelli, potatoes, bread, cereals, rice...

When cooking, prioritize steamed and boiled dishes and minimize fried and greasy dishes.

Drink plenty of water to increase uric acid excretion, should drink alkaline mineral water. Need to ensure daily water intake of 40ml/kg body weight/day. Supplement 500 - 1000mg vitamin C daily.
