Le Anh Quan (10 years old) was born deaf, holding a gift in one hand and a star lantern in the other, smiling brightly. “The lantern is beautiful, I like it very much,” the boy waved his hands and mumbled. Although he could not pronounce the words clearly, his eyes shone with joy.
Next to Anh Quan, the boys and girls were all excited about their gifts. Some of them gently pressed each bag of cookies and candies as if to guess whether the inside was soft or hard before opening it to enjoy. “Today there are many delicious candies and cakes, I will bring them home to save for my birthday,” said Nguyen Thi Dong Nhi (11 years old) who drew signs with her hand when asked about her “plan” for the gift she received.
Le Anh Quan and Nguyen Thi Dong Nhi are two of the 28 deaf students studying at the Quang Nam Center for Support and Education for Deaf Children (Dien Ban Dong Ward). Although they could not hear clearly, each child seemed to be filled with emotion on the morning of September 30 when they received gifts.
From a small class specializing in teaching deaf children founded by Ms. Maire MCCAin (Australia) in 2008, the facility has developed into the Quang Nam Center for Support and Education for Deaf Children (2020), a place to receive, manage, care for, educate and provide career guidance for deaf children in Hoi An city, Duy Xuyen district and communes and wards in the eastern part of Dien Ban town (old).
The center is tutoring and providing career guidance to 28 children from 9 to 16 years old. The children are divided into groups with appropriate educational programs, many of whom have been with the center for nearly 10 years, some of whom, after listening and speaking clearly, have been sent to primary schools to integrate with normal children.
Ms. Dong Thi Nhu Lien, Director of the Quang Nam Center for Support and Education for Deaf Children, said that every Mid-Autumn Festival, teachers will introduce the children to activities such as lion dances, receiving gifts, etc., so the class eagerly waits. A small cake or a simple lantern is enough to make the children happy all day. The Mid-Autumn Festival is not only a full moon festival, but also a day for deaf children to feel the care, love and complete integration into the community.
Ms. Le Thi Anh, Le Anh Bakery, who gives Mid-Autumn gifts to disabled children at the Quang Nam Center for Support and Education for Deaf Children, said that to bring joy to the children, a few days ago she used her own money to buy ingredients to make cakes, and also bought candies and star lanterns to wrap into pretty gift bags.
On the morning of September 30, the children not only received gifts but also participated in a number of meaningful activities such as learning how to assemble moon cake boxes, drawing pictures, letters, and dreams on pebbles, etc., creating a joyful atmosphere for the hearing-impaired children.
“Although the gift is simple, we want to show our solidarity and sharing, so that the children feel that they are not forgotten on special holidays like the Mid-Autumn Festival. I am truly happy to see the children happy. Even though they cannot talk like normal children, their eyes and tight hugs say it all,” Ms. Le Anh shared.
Caring for children with disabilities is not only the responsibility of the state but also increasingly attracts many kind hearts and connections from the community to compensate for the disadvantages of the less fortunate. At the Quang Nam Social Protection Center (Hoi An Dong Ward), which is raising 12 disabled, orphaned, and homeless children, almost every Mid-Autumn Festival welcomes many individuals and organizations to visit and give gifts.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Lien, Deputy Director of the center, said that this year, in addition to organizing for children to have fun at Funny Land Hoi An, the center will also welcome many groups of students, state agencies, and organizations to visit, exchange, and give gifts.
On October 4, the Danang Han River Construction Team will come to organize a performance, lion dance, and give 100 gifts to children and the elderly being cared for at the center, so everyone is eagerly waiting for these days.
