Based on the subject combinations for university entrance exams, new high schools have enough information to advise students on choosing subjects for the high school graduation exam, choosing majors and universities suitable for their abilities and wishes...
Refer to old project for new program
Most high schools have surveyed and allowed 12th grade students to register for 2 elective subjects in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam. This will be reference information for schools to proactively develop plans to organize review and tutoring for students to ensure the quality of the first High School Graduation Exam and university entrance exam of the 2018 General Education Program.
Among the 424 12th grade students of Son Tra High School (Son Tra, Da Nang), 176 students registered to take the exam in Physics, 89 in Chemistry, 21 in Biology, 234 in English, 1 in Korean, 1 in Japanese, 119 in History, 127 in Geography, 56 in Economic and Legal Education, 11 in Industrial Technology and 8 students chose Information Technology.
Principal Bui Minh Quang said: “The subject selection survey is for reference only, students still have the opportunity to adjust their choices until the time of submitting their application. However, the school still organizes consultations for students and parents in choosing subjects to register in a direction that is closely related to the subjects in the university entrance exam subject group. From there, students can proactively choose options to participate in the exam, increasing their chances of being admitted according to their wishes.”
However, both teachers and 12th grade students of Son Tra High School currently only rely on the university's 2024 Enrollment Plan for reference when choosing subjects related to the admission combination. "Although in 2025, enrollment is expected to have many changes to match the 2018 General Education Program, up to this point, students mostly choose traditional combinations to register because few higher education institutions announce early enrollment plans," commented Mr. Quang.
As a homeroom teacher, Ms. Vu Thi Huong - Thai Phien High School (Da Nang) proactively sought information about changes and adjustments in the admissions process of universities and colleges to improve the effectiveness of career guidance and counseling for students.
“However, up to this point, both teachers and students are confused about choosing two more elective subjects because there is almost no information about the subject combinations for university admission. In addition to being suitable for students’ abilities and interests, it must also be closely linked to their career orientation to increase efficiency in university admissions,” said Ms. Huong.
In reality, many students intend to take the entrance exam for engineering or medical fields and have chosen the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology groups to register for from grade 10. However, with the 2025 high school graduation exam plan, this group can only choose one of the two groups of Physics, Chemistry or Chemistry, Biology to register for the exam.
In this case, Mr. Nguyen Van Tan - Principal of Tran Cao Van High School (Tam Ky, Quang Nam) said that students need to be advised on additional backup plans such as using high school transcripts, participating in competency assessment exams... to have more options in registering for admission wishes.

Take the initiative
Tran Cao Van High School has analyzed the survey data of elective subjects of grade 12 students to organize teaching, learning and review early. For Math and Literature, the school has added 1 period/week right from the beginning of the school year. Professional groups have focused on building a question bank according to the Ministry's sample question structure so that students can get familiar with the new question types.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tan said that through analyzing the sample questions, it shows that if teachers do not change their teaching methods and students do not make efforts in studying and reviewing, it will be difficult to maintain the high school graduation exam results like in previous years. Therefore, the school strongly requires teachers to innovate testing and assessment methods according to the sample questions so that students can quickly adapt and adjust their learning methods from the beginning of the year.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, it is expected that the university admission plan in 2025 will have many changes. If the high school graduation exam has 6 subjects as before, students registering for the Natural Science combination exam means there will be at least 7 traditional combinations for admission.
Meanwhile, according to the 2+2 option, candidates only have 1-2 traditional combinations for admission. For example, if a candidate chooses 2 optional subjects, Chemistry and Biology, there will only be 1 combination, B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology). If a student chooses English and Physics, there will be 2 combinations, D01 (Math, Literature, English), A01 (Math, Physics, English). Some combinations will no longer exist, for example, combination D90 (Math, Natural Sciences, English).
Meanwhile, students who wish to apply for admission to top universities such as Health, Commerce... often focus on studying quite early and do not wait until the time to apply for the high school graduation exam to start accelerating.
“Therefore, students, parents and schools all hope that universities will soon announce their university admission plans so that high schools can make timely adjustments in teaching and learning organization as well as develop plans to organize early and effective review sessions,” said Principal of Tran Cao Van High School.
Tran Uy - a 12/13 grade student at Thai Phien High School (Da Nang) wishes to apply for admission to the Border Guard Academy. Uy said: "I don't know if the military schools will make any adjustments in admissions this year. Therefore, I still rely on the admission criteria of 2024 to build my study goals."
Accordingly, Uy is making efforts for the upcoming city-level excellent student exam with the goal of at least getting third prize in Geography. In addition, Uy is trying to study all subjects to meet the condition of having excellent academic results for 5 semesters and focusing on 3 subjects: Literature, History, Geography to get high scores in the upcoming High School Graduation Exam.
Son Tra High School proactively updates information related to the university's enrollment activities to send to homeroom teachers for students and parents to refer to. However, according to Principal Bui Minh Quang, very few universities currently announce early enrollment plans.
Meanwhile, top public schools in recent years have reduced their enrollment quotas based on high school transcripts. Therefore, compared to previous years, this year's 12th graders are quite passive in their orientation, exam subject selection, and university admission options.
