According to the statistics, Vinh Long province's sports currently has a significant human resource potential with a total of 108 coaches and 697 athletes in 3 training lines. In particular, the province is managing and organizing training for 19 sports of 19 gifted teams with 36 coaches and 322 athletes; 15 youth teams with 29 coaches and 153 athletes, and 17 provincial teams with 43 coaches and 222 athletes.

Vinh Long Archery hopes for a breakthrough in the future

Although there are no athletes who have officially met Olympic standards, Vinh Long province's sports sector still has high hopes for potential names such as Le Quoc Phong (Archery), Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (Taekwondo) and Pham Thanh Bao (Swimming). These are all athletes approaching international standards, so Vinh Long's sports sector has determined to focus all resources on key investments for these athletes, aiming to be able to win a place to participate in the 2028 Olympics in the US. According to the provincial sports sector's leaders, this is not only a specific goal but also a long-term orientation, with strategic significance to raise the level of high-performance sports in the province in the new development stage.

Inherit and promote the 3-in-1 power

Infrastructure is the first resource that the sports sector of Vinh Long province inherited after the merger of three provinces. Specifically, the province has inherited a fairly complete system of sports facilities including 03 sports training and competition centers, 03 multi-purpose gymnasiums, 03 large stadiums, 03 large swimming pools, 02 small swimming pools and 15 specialized training rooms. Although there is still a lack of synchronization, this system is basically enough to meet the needs of training and competition. In the future, with the goal of in-depth investment in strong sports, the province will upgrade and complete the system of key facilities and especially promote socialization to create momentum for stable and sustainable development for Vinh Long sports.

In terms of human resources, it is not an exaggeration to say that the merger of three provinces has helped Vinh Long of today have a new and much stronger appearance. The province has great opportunities to build stronger teams.

According to Mr. Cao Quoc Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province, the merger of the sports sector of the three provinces is a special advantage as we can offer more choices of better forces from sports that all three old provinces have teams such as Men's Volleyball, Athletics, Swimming or Karate.

However, besides the advantages, there are still challenges, which is how to arrange scientifically and reasonably, avoiding disruption during the transition process. And to solve this problem, the Department's leaders have directed a thorough review, objectively evaluating the professional capacity, competition achievements and development potential of each coach and athlete. The ultimate goal is to build a new squad in a streamlined direction, but possessing outstanding high quality. The sports teams of Vinh Long province will be selected based on the principle of fair and public competition, ensuring that only the strongest and most worthy collectives will represent Vinh Long sports.

Scientific and reasonable solutions

To improve the quality of sports teams after the merger, the Vinh Long province sports sector has made adjustments, paying attention to the professional conditions and living conditions of athletes and coaches. According to the provincial sports sector leaders, this is the key to retaining and developing talent.

It is known that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province has proactively asked for the policy of the Provincial People's Committee and People's Council to temporarily apply the best treatment policies that the three old provinces have implemented, including: the training and competition nutrition regime of Tra Vinh province; the living expense support regime for coaches and athletes summoned to the youth team and national team of Ben Tre province; the bonus regime for coaches and athletes who achieve achievements at the National Congresses and Championships of Vinh Long province (old). The goal of this is to create stability, encourage spirit, and help the entire sports force feel secure to stay with the province for a long time.

At the same time, to stabilize the psychology and living conditions of the athletes, the training of the teams is still maintained by the province at locations in the three old provinces. Specifically, in Vinh Long province (base 1) including Archery, Taekwondo, Swimming, Vovinam, Women's Volleyball, Cycling, Sepak Takraw, Table Tennis and Football; in Tra Vinh (base 2) including Petanque, Men's Volleyball, Aerobics, Badminton, Karate and Judo; and in Ben Tre (base 3) including Chess, Canoeing, Kickboxing, Kurash and Beach Volleyball.

Currently, Vinh Long is actively preparing athletes to participate in major sports tournaments. In particular, the provincial sports sector is expecting over 20 qualified coaches and athletes to be included in the national team participating in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December 2025. Furthermore, the provincial sports sector aims to have more Olympic-qualified athletes in key sports such as: Archery, Swimming, Taekwondo and Athletics by 2028.

In the future, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will continue to research and rearrange training maintenance to optimize, ensure expertise and create the most favorable conditions for coaches and athletes. Moving forward, the industry will advise on the development of separate, synchronous and sustainable Resolutions and policies for the entire province.

After the merger, Vinh Long sports won 29 medals at 2 national tournaments, including 23 medals (11 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze, ranked 2nd out of 12 participating delegations) at the National Archery Championship and 06 medals (01 gold, 02 silver, 03 bronze) at the 2025 National Youth Athletics Championship.
