Faced with pouring rain, Mayor Daniel Marriere of Coulonces (in the Normandy region, northwest France) signed a directive asking “for the rain to stop” and called on parish priests to join the effort.
Mayor Marriere's decision comes as parts of France have been hit by unusually wet weather. Meteo France said last week that June saw 20% more rain than the 1991-2020 average. In some areas, rainfall was even double the normal.
"I've never seen this kind of weather in July," said Daniel Marriere. "Yesterday morning it was pouring rain, the sky was grey and you could barely see what you were doing. You even had to turn on the lights in the house."

Fed up with the heavy summer rains, the head of the village of 227 people decided to take matters into his own hands by signing a weather-related directive.
"By this directive, I order that the rains stop in August, September and all of October, and are replaced by bright sunshine and light winds," Mayor Marriere wrote.
He asked parish priests in northern France to contribute to the effort to combat the rain by "contacting the heavens and taking responsibility for implementing this directive".
Mr. Marriere said that not long after the above directive was issued, many residents of Coulonces commune came to thank him.
