University valedictorian feels pressured when seeing many classmates who are both smart and knowledgeable

At the opening ceremony of the 2024-2025 school year held on the morning of October 4, the International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University) honored the school's two valedictorians. With a score of 29.05/30 in the high school graduation exam, Nguyen Kim Ngan was the valedictorian according to the high school graduation score method.

Ngan is a former student of Le Thanh Tong High School, Ho Chi Minh City - a private school with the most university valedictorians in the country in recent years. The female valedictorian is a freshman majoring in biomedical engineering. Second is Ngo Gia Phong, a former student of Quang Trung High School for the Gifted ( Binh Phuoc province), a freshman majoring in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Ngo Gia Phong is the valedictorian of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's 2024 aptitude test with 1,056/1,200 points. Phong shared that his high school studies were not too stressful, and his parents did not place too much emphasis on academic performance. This male student's study method is to thoroughly grasp the content and knowledge in the textbook program, and focus on listening to lectures in class. At home, Phong reviews lessons and practices questions for about 2-3 hours a day. The male valedictorian said that studying in high school was quite easy for him. However, even though he had just entered university and become a freshman not long ago, Phong clearly saw that he was facing a lot of pressure. The first pressure was the pressure of the amount of homework and knowledge at university being much greater. Not to mention, the school taught entirely in English, while foreign languages ​​were not Phong's strong point, so he would have to make more effort. In addition, the male valedictorian revealed that, in addition to pressure from himself, the biggest pressure he faced was peer pressure. "At university, I met and interacted with many friends who were both talented and knowledgeable about social issues, and were very active and energetic. I really felt the pressure and knew that I would have to make a lot of effort," male student Ngo Gia Phong confided.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the International University welcomed nearly 2,200 new students admitted to the school through 7 different methods, of which 1,758 students were admitted through the high school graduation exam score method. In this school year alone, the school awarded 145 scholarships with a total value of nearly 6 billion VND to honor and reward new students with high achievements in the 2024 university entrance exam. In a message to new students, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thang said that university is not the starting point for students on the path of learning, nor is it the final destination, but this is the beginning of a new journey with many challenges and aspirations of youth. Each student has their own journey, they need to focus on their personal goals, develop themselves and not compare themselves with others. Students, please live your life to the fullest, don't waste your youth in the university lecture hall. Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thang also emphasized that a bright future ahead is created by you, depending on your own attitude and actions right now. The principal expressed that the constantly changing social context, from natural disasters, wars, epidemics to the 4.0 industrial revolution, is strongly affecting life, bringing many challenges to each country but at the same time opening up many opportunities. To be able to cope with the existing challenges, according to Mr. Thang, students need to overcome stereotypes and prejudices to create the world in their own way. Because each student should always remember that they are all special individuals and be proud of their differences, spread positive things to the community and be open to receive and learn from other cultures. Students should learn to think long-term and dare to dream, dare to believe in themselves, prepare themselves to overcome all obstacles to stand out and succeed. International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University) is the first multidisciplinary public university that teaches entirely in English.
