On October 20, the People's Committee of Da Nang City held a conference to summarize the overall investment plan for preserving, restoring and promoting the value of the World Cultural Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town associated with tourism development, period 2012 - 2025.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thi - Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee said that after nearly 13 years of implementation, the work of preserving, embellishing and promoting the value of the ancient town of Hoi An has had comprehensive changes.
The relic system has been renovated and restored, many structures have escaped the risk of serious degradation. Hoi An continues to affirm its position as a leading destination for Vietnamese and world tourism , and is also a model of combining heritage conservation with sustainable development.

Ms. Thi emphasized that the two-level local government model helps Hoi An be more proactive in conservation work, shorten administrative processes, improve management efficiency, ensure harmony between conservation and tourism development, between preserving cultural values and improving community life.
“Hoi An is a living urban heritage, requiring us to be extremely careful, considerate, and scientific so as not to destroy the overall character of an ancient commercial port city - an ecological - cultural - tourist city. The planning needs to ensure the connection between Hoi An and the Cu Lao Cham World Biosphere Reserve, overcome shortcomings, and keep up with the digital age,” Ms. Thi emphasized.
According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang, from 2012 to present, Hoi An has recorded 17.4 million visitors buying tickets, including 14 million foreign visitors; revenue from ticket sales reached over 1,900 billion VND.
Heritage conservation associated with cultural industry development
At the conference, experts proposed strategic directions to preserve and promote the value of Hoi An sustainably in the new period.
Associate Professor Dr. Dang Van Bai - Vice Chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Council commented that the merger of administrative units creates a historic opportunity for the Da Nang - Hoi An area to transform into a new development pole, a driving force for the development of the cultural industry.
According to him, the ancient town of Hoi An belongs to the category of "living heritage" so it is necessary to pursue the "dynamic conservation" model - turning cultural values into economic resources.
Hoi An will provide an irreplaceable source of cultural materials for Da Nang's cultural industries. Meanwhile, Da Nang has the strength of "modernization" and "commercialization", helping to form a complete system to convert "cultural capital" into "economic products" of high value.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim - Vice Chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Council said that Hoi An has outstanding advantages in heritage tourism, while Da Nang is listed as a "livable city". This will be the fulcrum for developing a multi-sector service-tourism economic model, associated with heritage conservation and exploitation of local identity.
According to him, Hoi An has the characteristics of an urban space that harmoniously combines garden villages, craft villages and ecological space, from which it can develop cultural industry, entertainment industry and heritage economy.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong shared that the World Cultural Heritage Hoi An Ancient Town is one of the treasures not only of Da Nang but also the common pride of Vietnam.
The Deputy Minister noted that when making a new plan, Da Nang needs to inherit the basic orientations that Hoi An and Quang Nam previously built around the axis: Ecology - Culture - Tourism; update new trends and recommendations of UNESCO; regulations of the Law on Cultural Heritage. At the same time, Hoi An needs to make good use of the advantages brought after being under Da Nang's management to break through and become a prominent model of the world in heritage conservation.
