US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed with Washington's "bridging proposal" to resolve differences blocking a ceasefire in Gaza, and urged the Hamas Islamist movement to make a similar move.
Speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv on August 19, Secretary of State Blinken said that he and Prime Minister Netanyahu had a positive and constructive discussion. During the meeting, Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed that Israel accepted and supported the new proposal. However, Mr. Blinken emphasized that the most important thing now is that Hamas must support the above "bridge proposal", which, according to him, includes the draft agreement announced by US President Joe Biden in May aiming for a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of hostages.
The proposal was sent to Israel and Hamas by Qatari, Egyptian and US mediators over the weekend after the latest round of talks in Qatar.
As planned, today, March 20, Secretary of State Blinken will travel to Qatar, the country that plays the role of main mediator in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, after stopping in Israel and Egypt to promote the ceasefire proposal. Mr. Blinken emphasized that Egypt and Qatar are two important partners in the effort to "bring the ceasefire agreement to the finish line", helping the hostages return home, as well as promoting towards lasting peace and security in the region.
