Vietnam's No. 1 female tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh was unable to touch the gold medal at this year's tournament, after losing to Chinese opponent Cai Yanyan in a dramatic final match that took place this afternoon at Nguyen Du Gymnasium (HCMC).
Entering the match as the only Vietnamese player to reach the final, Nguyen Thuy Linh ( world rank 18) is expected to make history against Cai Yanyan (world rank 107).
However, the ranking does not fully reflect the class of the Chinese tennis player, who once rose to 14th in the world and has many impressive international achievements.
Right from the first set, Cai Yanyan showed her superiority with skillful handling of the shuttlecock, continuously scoring points and creating distance. Although Thuy Linh responded with powerful smashes, the Chinese player still maintained the advantage and won 21-17.
In the second set, Thuy Linh played more aggressively, constantly pressing and creating difficult shots, taking the lead. However, with her courage and experience, Cai Yanyan promptly rose up, equalizing 18-18 and bringing the set into a tense tug-of-war.
The final minutes of set 2 witnessed a breathtaking score chase, causing the audience at Nguyen Du Stadium to continuously burst into emotions. Thuy Linh excellently saved 2 championship points, but in the end, Cai Yanyan still kept her composure and won 23-21, thereby being crowned champion.
After the match, Thuy Linh frankly admitted her opponent's level: "My opponent played better, maybe in the decisive moments they were more courageous. In the final stages, he made fewer mistakes than me. Most of the decisive points he won were due to my mistakes."
Although she could not win the gold medal, Nguyen Thuy Linh gave an emotional match and showed a resilient fighting spirit. After this tournament, she will continue her journey to conquer international tournaments, with the next destination being the China Masters 2025 from September 16 to September 21.
