Continue to spend tens of billions of dong to restore Hue Citadel

HUE - The project to preserve, restore and embellish the Hue Citadel system with a total cost of nearly 50 billion VND is being implemented.

In June 2023, Area 1 of the Upper Citadel and Eo Bau (one side to the South and one side to the East of Hue Citadel) was renovated, abandoned houses were leveled and trees and grass were cleared. This is a project accompanying the resettlement work in the Upper Citadel, invested by the Hue City Land Fund Development Center, with a total cost of more than 35 billion VND. In early 2025, Hue City will continue to implement the Project of Preservation, Restoration and Renovation of the Hue Citadel System, including the items of restoration and renovation of the Upper Citadel, Eo Bau and the stone embankment of the Ho Thanh moat from Quan Tuong Dai to Tay Thanh Thuy Quan (the project area is being implemented).

The project, invested by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center with a total budget of VND49.3 billion, aims to protect and maintain heritage values, reinforce degraded structures, and improve the landscape of the area.

The project will renovate the Upper Citadel, covering an area of ​​892m and 21m wide. It includes excavation, earthwork, and paving of Bat Trang bricks for walkways and artillery platforms.

The remaining land area will be covered with clover and damaged and cracked walls will be reinforced to ensure structural stability.

The Tay An and Tay Trinh Passes, located within the Hue Citadel system, will also be renovated. This includes earthworks, rebuilding artillery ramps, reinforcing retaining walls with boulders, restoring ammunition depots, and paving walkways with Bat Trang tiles. (The area around the ammunition depot will be renovated.)

For the Ho Thanh moat system, the focus will be on repairing and embellishing the inner stone embankment, 1,159m long, extending from Quan Tuong Dai to Tay Thanh Thuy Quan. Damaged and eroded embankments will be dismantled, cleaned and old materials will be reused during the restoration process.

The foundation of the embankment will be reinforced by driving bamboo piles, pouring reinforced concrete and rebuilding with rubble combined with cement mortar. In addition, the trench will also be dredged, cofferdams built and water diversion treatment.

The project to preserve, restore and embellish the Hue Citadel system is expected to be completed in October 2027. (The upper citadel in the Quan Tuong Dai area will be renovated and restored.)

When completed, the project is expected to change the landscape, restoring the original appearance of the Upper Citadel and Eo Bau relics. In the future, it will be opened to serve the sightseeing needs of residents and tourists.
