Passing the university entrance exam is a great joy for students and a great pride for their families. However, the four-year university entrance exam is not as "rosy" as everyone thinks. New students have to live far from home, be independent and no longer be under the control of their families.
New students complete admission procedures and register for dormitories at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade in 2025.
Almost became "prey"
To save money for their families, many students try to arrange time to work part-time right from their first year. Attractive invitations such as "light work, high salary", "get paid immediately after finishing the job", "no experience required"... have hit the psychology of young people.
Ho Chi Minh City police and schools have continuously issued warnings about new scams. However, with increasingly sophisticated tricks, new students are still the most attractive "prey" of bad guys. Many cases of "lost" money in accounts just because of clicking the wrong link.
Nguyen Huong Giang, a new student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that right after being admitted to university, she joined groups to look for part-time jobs near the school. As soon as she saw that the recruiting unit required a deposit of 500,000 VND and the provision of personal documents, Giang asked her sister to borrow money.
"My family sent me many articles about students being scammed, using tricks similar to mine. That's when I was startled and immediately gave up the idea of working part-time early," Giang worriedly said.
Parents worry when their daughters have to study at university far from home.
As a person working in the field of psychology - education , Master of Psychology Dang Hoang An believes that the first year of university is like the stage of laying the foundation for a house. If students rush to work too soon, they may miss out on building important foundations such as: getting used to the new environment, university study methods and extracurricular activities.
According to MSc. An, for new students with difficult circumstances, working part-time is valuable. However, consider carefully. If you decide to work part-time, you should only work a maximum of 15-20 hours/week and prioritize jobs related to your major or that help develop soft skills.
Take the initiative to protect yourself
New students are potential targets for many types of fraud and other risks, from social network fraud, job fraud, to social security issues. In addition, students can also face unhealthy emotional relationships, affecting their mental health, learning or even endangering their lives.
According to experts, students need to proactively equip themselves with knowledge about the law, common fraud methods, cross-check information and not share personal information indiscriminately.
Students look for reputable part-time jobs at job fairs organized by the school.
Mr. Le Nguyen Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Student Support Center, affirmed that new students are attractive "prey" for scammers. The Center is coordinating with the Ho Chi Minh City Police Youth Union to organize the program "Tour 360: Safe Schools in the Digital Age", which will last until December 2025.
"Not only stopping at propaganda to identify and prevent fraud, but also encouraging students to become active propagandists, joining hands to build a safe and civilized school environment, not allowing fraud to infiltrate students' lives" - Mr. Nam said.
In particular, each university and college will establish a "360 Team", a core force in maintaining a warning information channel and spreading anti-fraud knowledge in the community.
Stay away from unhealthy pleasures
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Head of Communications Department of International University - VNU-HCM, said that each year the school enrolls about 2,000 students, but only about 50-60% of students graduate on time.
According to Master Ngoc, the university environment is completely different from high school, with flexible study time. This comfort has caused many students to easily "stumble". If they are not mentally strong and determined to study, new students will be swept away by all-night parties and unhealthy pleasures. From there, it affects their health, family finances , and quality of study...
