The building is covered with trees equivalent to 10,000 m2 of forest

The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest in the Netherlands is expected to house around 10,000 saplings and 300 trees of 30 different species.

Since the critically acclaimed Bosco Verticale twin towers in Italy, Italian architect Stefano Boeri's firm Stefano Boeri Architetti has continued to design many tree-covered buildings around the world , New Atlas reported on May 26. The latest project, called Wonderwoods Vertical Forest, is expected to be adorned with thousands of trees, including hundreds of trees, equivalent to about 10,000 square meters of forest.

The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is located in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and is part of a larger two-building project. Stefano Boeri Architetti designed the taller building, which will stand 105 meters tall. It will house apartments, office space, restaurants, and dramatic landscaping. Plants will be grown in pots outside, providing greenery to the balconies.

"The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest will contain 200 apartments of various types, suitable for a wide range of users, and 15,000 m2 of office space. In addition, the facade of the building will feature around 10,000 small trees and 300 trees of 30 different species, equivalent to the vegetation of 1 hectare (10,000 m2) of forest. The building represents a true urban ecosystem, inspired by the vegetation of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park and capable of producing around 41 tons of oxygen per year," explains Stefano Boeri Architetti.

“Plants also reduce the city’s noise pollution. In summer, the shade from the foliage helps reduce the heat island effect, lowering the temperature on the facade and inside the building, significantly affecting the local microclimate, the health of residents, and saving energy used for air conditioning,” the company added.

The trees will be tended by a team of “flying gardeners,” who will use specialized equipment and move down from the top of the building, similar to some of Boeri’s other projects. There’s no word yet on how the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest will be irrigated, but the company’s previous projects have included rainwater harvesting systems.

Construction of the new building is underway, with plants being placed in place by cranes and professional gardeners. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
