Overview of the visit to Vietnam of the General Secretary, President of Laos and his wife

VOV.VN - Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, his wife Naly Sisoulith and a high-ranking delegation of the Lao Party and State will visit Vietnam from September 10 to 13, at the invitation of General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife.

On the morning of September 10, the official welcoming ceremony for General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, his wife and the high-ranking delegation of the Lao Party and State was solemnly held at the Presidential Palace according to the highest protocol reserved for heads of state with a 21-gun salute; General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife presided over the welcoming ceremony.

Following the success of President To Lam's official visit to Laos in July after taking office, this visit by Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith and his wife continues to strengthen the special friendship and solidarity between the two Parties, two countries and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.

Currently, the political relationship between the two countries continues to be strengthened and increasingly deepened, connected and trustworthy. Laos-Vietnam defense cooperation has been enhanced, contributing to maintaining peace and political stability in each country. In terms of economy, Vietnam has invested in 256 projects in Laos worth 5.5 billion USD; Laos-Vietnam trade in the first 8 months of 2024 reached 1.3 billion USD; Vietnam will import 3,000 MW of electricity from Laos by 2025.

Immediately after the official welcoming ceremony, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, General Secretary and President To Lam held talks with General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith.

At the talks, the two leaders agreed to strengthen the pillars of cooperation in defense and security, ensuring a solid foundation for each other to effectively deal with increasingly diverse and complex security challenges; actively and effectively implement protocols and cooperation plans on defense and security, contributing to maintaining political stability in each country.

The two sides also agreed to create a breakthrough in economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation on the basis of exploiting and maximizing the potential and strengths of each country, promoting the substantial connection between the two economies in terms of institutions, infrastructure, transportation, telecommunications, and tourism, while promoting the connection between the three economies of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia as agreed by the governments of the three countries.

The two sides agreed to maintain effective information exchange and assessment of the international situation, pay attention to and protect each other's legitimate interests in accordance with international law, including the East Sea issue and sustainable use of Mekong River water resources; consult, closely coordinate, and effectively support each other in international and regional issues and activities at multilateral forums.

During the visit, on the morning of September 10, Ms. Naly Sisoulith, wife of General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, visited Ms. Ngo Thi Man, wife of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and burned incense in memory of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at her private home in Hanoi.

During the visit, on the afternoon of September 10 in Hanoi, Mrs. Ngo Phuong Ly, wife of General Secretary and President To Lam, and Mrs. Naly Sisoulith, wife of General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, visited Birla Children's Village, Hanoi. After more than 30 years of operation, Birla Children's Village Hanoi has received more than 500 children with special circumstances for care and nurturing. They have been able to study and participate in cultural, artistic, physical education and sports movements; receive career counseling and job connections to help them stabilize their lives and reintegrate into the community.

Meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith sent his sincere condolences to the Vietnamese people, especially the localities and people affected by the natural disaster caused by storm No. 3.

On September 11, in Hanoi, the High-level Meeting between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party took place, co-chaired by General Secretary and President To Lam and General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith. This is an important cooperation mechanism in the relationship between the two Parties and two countries, contributing to strengthening and deepening the special solidarity between the two Parties, two States and peoples of Vietnam and Laos.

At the meeting, the two sides affirmed that the Vietnam-Laos relationship is a priceless common asset of the two peoples, an objective necessity and the greatest source of strength for the two parties, two states and peoples, and needs to continue to promote, preserve and pass on to future generations.

General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that the Vietnam-Laos relationship has always been a top priority in Vietnam's foreign policy. General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith affirmed that, under any circumstances, Laos will join Vietnam in consolidating, preserving and fostering the special solidarity between Vietnam and Laos to grow stronger.

On the afternoon of September 11, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith. At the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly will continue to support Laos in successfully assuming the role of ASEAN Chair and AIPA 45 Chair; is ready to share experiences and provide professional assistance in issues where Vietnam has strengths, such as monitoring the implementation of budget estimates, building a legal corridor, and monitoring key cooperation projects between the two countries.

Appreciating the cooperation between the two countries' parliaments, Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith said that the relationship between the two parliaments is an important factor contributing to the overall success of the good relationship between the two countries.

On the afternoon of September 11, General Secretary and President To Lam and Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith met with former volunteer soldiers, experts, Vietnamese students studying in Laos and the young generation of the two countries. The meeting took place in a warm atmosphere, imbued with the friendship between Vietnam and Laos.

At the meeting, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his pride and emotion for the enormous contributions and sacrifices of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts in Laos; affirmed that most battlefields in Laos bear the mark of Lao and Vietnamese soldiers; and remembered the impressive images in history of soldiers from the two countries fighting side by side, sharing the same trenches, sharing joys and sorrows, supporting and helping each other, biting a grain of rice in half, breaking a vegetable in half, sacrificing for each other to bring independence and freedom to the nation and happiness and prosperity to the people of the two countries.
