- At the age of nearly 50, Thanh Mai is still attractive thanks to her ageless beauty and toned, slim body. What is her secret?
If in your twenties, the beauty secret is simply wearing a scarf, wearing a pink shirt, and applying some lipstick, then at my age, my body needs comprehensive care, from appearance to spirit.
My current beauty is the result of a combination of many factors, from exercise regimen, lifestyle, eating and sleeping early, nutrition, care...
I usually sleep early, around 10pm. However, I can’t always do that. I’m not perfect, city life, friendships, and my fun-loving nature, so sometimes I go to bed later, but no matter how much fun I have, I go to bed before 12am. I don’t drink alcohol or soft drinks. I drink a lot of water, and fruit juice in moderation.
- Is the title "Ageless Beauty" a pressure for you?
No. Sometimes when I go out, I still hear people say that this woman is old but why is she so young? I was lucky to start my career early, since I was in my teens. Many of the audiences who watched my films when they were very young are now married, some have grown children and are grandmothers.
Even if I get older, in 10 or 20 years I will still be old, I can't be an 18 or 20 year old girl forever. But being healthy for my age and looking presentable for my age makes me happy.
I’m not afraid of aging anymore. When I was young, I thought 30 or 40 was too old. But now I’m 50, but I still look good, right? (laughs). I’m happy because I’ve achieved what I wanted.
- Until now, in the hearts of many audiences, Thanh Mai is still "the poor goalkeeper". How do you feel when the audience calls you by this name?
I am grateful. Every actor is lucky enough to have just one role, one moment in a scene that people remember and that is enough to make him happy. For example, the movie Gone with the Wind, the role of Scarlett O'Hara, always comes to mind. I like Audrey Hepburn in some movies.
Or in the movie Titanic , I always remember the image of two people standing at the bow of the ship with their hands raised… For me too, having a role that the audience remembers is a great blessing in my life.
- Known as the Queen of 90s calendar photos, do you remember the first time you appeared in a newspaper or magazine?
That was the year I studied at the dance school, around 14, 15 years old. At that time, I remember that Nhan Dan newspaper came to Saigon to take pictures of dancers. I was one of three friends chosen, we did the dance moves and the picture was published in the newspaper. That night, I rode my bike to the newspaper stand and bought that newspaper. I was so happy! It was the first time in my life that I was in the newspaper, at that time they didn't even write my name, they just wrote that I was a class 1 dancer of the dance school in Ho Chi Minh City, but I was so happy and joyful.
Later, when I won a film award (runner-up in the 1992 Tomorrow's Movie Star contest), my image appeared in many newspapers. I was very happy, but I will never forget the feeling the first time my image appeared in the newspaper.
- I heard that actress Thanh Mai bought a house in the city center at a very young age?
At that time, houses were cheap, everything was cheap. I remember performing one night I earned several taels of gold. Back then, I had elaborate dances with Ly Hung, Diem Huong, etc. There was a time when I performed three shows a day during Tet at the City Theater.
At that time, there was no Facebook, Tiktok, Youtube, there weren't many TV channels, there weren't many means of entertainment, people would go to the cinema or watch art shows in large numbers.
Our 7X generation had a hard time after the war, so we didn't spend lavishly. When I had money from performing, I asked my parents to save it for me. When I had enough money, I saved up to buy a house. When I was 16 or 17, I took care of all my siblings' schooling and living expenses.
The first house I bought was when I was just a teenager. When I was 10 years old, I already had a small business outside. When I was 16, I had a small hair salon and shampoo shop on Ly Chinh Thang. After a while, I opened a bigger shop. 2 years later, the landlord took back the premises, I had to look for another place, so I bought a house.
In 2000, I had a big house on the corner in the center of the street. I sold the house I was living in at that time, borrowed money from the bank, and then friends bought it. Before that, I had houses in big alleys, houses in District 3, houses in Van Thanh. But that was the first house I had right next to Ben Thanh market.
- "Beauty with ill fate" or "Beauty with billions", which sentence do you think is true about your life?
I think beauty makes billions. Billions here does not mean luck falling from the sky. With good looks, I was invited to act in movies, invited to do art.
When I work at a beauty salon, I keep a good appearance, know how to take care of myself, I am trusted by customers, and earn billions from my work. My job comes partly from my appearance and many other factors, but it cannot be said that my appearance has not contributed to my small success.
- Do you ever feel miserable being famous?
I always feel so lucky. God gave me all my limbs, which is quite good, and I get to do the job I love. I don’t see anything that makes me sad. So I want to share positive things with everyone.
I am not the type of person who is all smiles on the outside. I am also not a sociable person. I prefer to meet familiar friends to talk about strange things, rather than meet strangers to talk about familiar things. I am tired of such socializing.
- How do you teach your children?
I teach my child to be independent and stand on his own two feet. I feel the joy of work. I hope he studies well, goes to work and receives the results of his work. He is currently studying at university, and he said he wants to study for a master's degree like his mother.
- Do you feel pressured being the daughter of a famous person like her?
I rarely make information about my child public. I respect my child's private life. My child lives in America, no one knows him. He also does not enter my life much. I let his life develop normally.
- Has the happiness of 18 years old and the happiness of a woman who has experienced the storms of life changed?
At 18, happiness was being on screen, having a movie that was well received by everyone. Joy was discovering , studying, graduating, getting a degree. Now, my happiness is different, the happiness of stability and peace. Whatever I want, I feel like I have achieved it.
If God blesses me more, that's good. If not, just live slowly and enjoy the beautiful life. I believe in the law of cause and effect, believe in positive energy. If you sow negativity, frown and say hurtful words to others, they can tolerate it once or twice, but the third time they will return those negative words to you.
- Many people say that talented women are not happy, no matter how talented they are, it is not as good as finding a rich husband. Do you think this is true?
I agree in part, but do you find love today more unstable? The old saying goes that a pot fits its lid. If you are with someone who refuses to move forward and stays in one place, are you still happy and want to continue?
I believe everyone should move today. No one should be a burden to anyone. We should only rely on each other, not depend on each other.
