Russian President Vladimir Putin visits the center of the Energia rocket and space corporation in the suburbs of Moscow on October 26.

At a meeting with space industry officials on October 26, Mr. Putin set a goal of putting the first part of the Russian space station into orbit by 2027.

According to President Putin, Moscow's decision to extend its participation in the International Space Station (ISS) until 2028 is only a temporary solution. The ISS has been in operation for 25 years and has recently experienced some problems with Russia's module.

"Since the ISS's resources are gradually depleting, we need to put not just a part of the station into space, but the entire station into operation," TASS quoted President Putin.

The leader said that the development of the Russian space station needs to be implemented on schedule, to avoid the risk of Russia falling behind in the ability to launch flights to put astronauts into space.

At the same time, Mr. Putin affirmed that Russia must continue to promote the moon program after Moscow failed to send a lander to the Earth's natural satellite in August.

For his part, Mr. Yuri Borisov, head of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), supports President Putin's view on the need to promote the program of building its own space station to maintain the country's ability to deploy manned missions.

"The ISS is aging and will have to stop operating around 2030," Mr. Borisov also predicted.
