Tran Anh Hung and Truong Nghe Muu shine on the red carpet of the Tokyo Film Festival

The red carpet opening of the Tokyo Film Festival (TIFF) on the evening of October 23 welcomed famous filmmakers from Asia and Japan.

The red carpet event and opening ceremony of the 36th Tokyo Film Festival took place on the evening of October 23 in Tokyo, Japan (local time).

Director Tran Anh Hung attended this year's film festival as the author of The Pot-au-Feu - a film participating in the Gala Selection category in Tokyo this year.

He walked the red carpet with his wife Tran Nu Yen Khe , who is also the film's art designer, and French actor Benoit Magimel, who plays the lead role in the film.

In addition to film screenings and introductions, director Tran Anh Hung will participate in Asia Lounge with discussions and exchanges with leading Asian directors such as Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke, Gu Xiaogang, Yoji Yamada, Mouly Surya and Yang Yonghi.

Taking note of the red carpet, Variety also highlighted directors Wim Wenders and Zhang Yimou as the focus of this year's event as the Tokyo Film Festival attempts to restart international connections.

Director Zhang Yimou appeared on the red carpet as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 36th Tokyo Film Festival. He is a veteran filmmaker of world cinema, a master admired throughout the world and Asia.

Zhang Yimou's presence is also a manifestation of the improved cultural exchanges between China and Japan. At the 2023 Tokyo Film Festival, many Chinese films participated. The opening ceremony also devoted an important part to honor Zhang Yimou.

"This is like a new beginning for me," Zhang Yimou said when receiving the award. He had previously attended the Tokyo Film Festival twice, 36 years ago and 18 years ago.

Hiroyasu Ando, president of the Tokyo Film Festival, said that this year the organizers are pleased to welcome 2,000 visitors from abroad. Last year, due to various restrictions, the organizers only welcomed 100 foreign visitors.

Mr. Hiroyasu Ando also apologized to the guests for the slow-moving red carpet event, causing inconvenience to many guests. "We were overloaded, so everything did not go as smoothly as expected," he explained.

German director Wim Wenders, who directed the opening film Perfect Days , is also the president of the jury for this year's festival. He also played a key role in organizing the 120th anniversary of the birth of cinema master Ozu Yasujiro .

The jury includes a representative from Vietnam, producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc (film Glorious Ashes ).

Perfect Days is considered to be the best fictional film by director Wim Wenders in many years. The film is set in Japan so it is considered very suitable to open TIFF this year.

The Tokyo Film Festival runs from October 23 to November 1. The closing film will be Godzilla Minus One.
