On September 4, in Soc Trang province, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference to review the pilot model of the Project on 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta (referred to as the Project). According to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in the summer-autumn and autumn-winter crop of 2024, the unit coordinated with 5 provinces and cities including Can Tho City, Tra Vinh , Soc Trang, Dong Thap and Kien Giang to pilot 7 pilot models of the Project.
Through post-harvest calculations, the model shows a reduction of 40%-50% in the amount of seeds sown; a reduction of 30%-40% in the amount of nitrogen fertilizer; a reduction of 3-4 times of spraying pesticides and a reduction of 30%-40% in the amount of irrigation water compared to cultivation outside the model. As a result, the production cost of 1kg of rice has decreased by 7%-20% (a reduction of 252-822 VND/kg); contributing to a reduction of 7.6-12 tons of CO2 /ha compared to cultivation outside the model. All pilot models are purchased by associated enterprises.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said that the task of the Project is to build a production method, linking farmers with businesses, ensuring input and output, increasing the highest profits for farmers. Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam requested the provinces participating in the Project to continue implementing the pilot model in the upcoming winter-spring crop; synthesizing data on the pilot model to make a handbook to disseminate to farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will direct its specialized units to continue to accompany localities to successfully implement the pilot models; there will be a pilot mechanism to pay low carbon credits for successful models.
