North Korea declares readiness to attack South Korea if more UAVs appear

In a statement carried by North Korean media on October 13, the North Korean Defense Ministry said the military had issued a preliminary combat order for artillery and other military units near the South Korean border to "prepare to fire."

A ministry spokesman said "serious military tensions are occurring on the Korean Peninsula" due to South Korea's drone launches.

The North Korean military has ordered relevant units to be fully prepared for any eventuality such as immediately striking unidentified enemy targets as South Korea continues to launch drones across the border, potentially triggering clashes on the Korean Peninsula.

Earlier on October 11, North Korea accused South Korea of using drones to drop leaflets over Pyongyang three times this month, and threatened to respond with force if this happened again.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned on October 12 that the discovery of a new South Korean drone "will surely lead to a terrible disaster".

South Korea refused to confirm the drone launch, but sternly warned North Korea if the safety of South Korean citizens was threatened.

Hostilities between North Korea and South Korea are at their worst in years with North Korean missile tests and stepped-up US-South Korea military exercises.

All communication channels and exchange programs between the two countries have remained stalled since 2019, when diplomatic talks between the US and North Korea on ending Pyongyang's nuclear program collapsed.
