Air transport enters a "reshaping" phase

At the discussion session "Enhancing the Adaptability and Resilience of Supply Chains" within the framework of the FIATA World Congress in early October, Mr. Ahmet Kürşat Baltacı, Head of Cargo Business Northeast Asia of Turkish Cargo, said that air transport is entering a phase of comprehensive reshaping after the Covid-19 pandemic. According to him, an airline is only truly flexible when it can re-establish a new flight route within 3 days. To do that, a business not only needs a large enough fleet but also must own a well-planned cargo center system (Cargo Hub), helping to quickly coordinate and optimize the transportation flow.

Istanbul Cargo Center, the headquarters of Turkish Cargo

Baltacı cited the example of Istanbul Cargo, the home of Turkish Cargo. Located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, the hub can reach 60% of global cargo traffic within just seven hours of flight time — not only because of its geographical advantage but also because of its investment in infrastructure, technology, automated processing lines and real-time flight dispatch systems.

“AI helps us forecast demand, allocate loads appropriately and make decisions based on real-time data. This turns speed into a sustainable competitive advantage,” said Baltacı.

From a regional perspective, Mr. Peter Lim, Vice President of the Singapore Logistics Association (SLA), said that Singapore's integrated and resilient logistics ecosystem model is proving to be highly effective.

According to Mr. Lim, Singapore has developed a 20-30 year long-term plan to synchronize seaports and airports to ensure connectivity and adaptability to global fluctuations. When the expansion project is completed, Changi Airport will increase its capacity from 90 to 140 million passengers/year, while also increasing its cargo capacity to serve as a regional transit hub.

In parallel, the Tuas Port – a new generation deep-water port – will have a capacity of 50–65 million TEUs of cargo per year. The two hubs are connected by an integrated logistics network, making Singapore one of the most dynamic global logistics hubs in the world.

Vietnam aims to become a new generation commodity center

In the context of strong increase in import and export, especially with high-tech goods and cross-border e-commerce, investing in modern, multi-modal cargo centers is considered a strategic move for Vietnam.

Mr. Dao Trong Khoa, Chairman of the Vietnam Logistics Services Association (VLA), said that the volume of goods transported by air in Vietnam will reach 1.3 million tons in 2023 and more than 1.5 million tons in 2024, making Vietnam rank 20th in the world in terms of air transport market size.

"This figure reflects the great potential of the Vietnamese market in connecting global production and consumption centers. The operations of Vietnamese airlines have gradually recovered, ensuring safety and stable growth," said Mr. Dao Trong Khoa.

Long Thanh – the bright spot of Air Cargo in the region

Long Thanh International Airport is expected to become Vietnam's "new generation cargo hub". The Ministry of Construction has just approved project information and selected investors for three logistics projects in the airport area, including cargo warehouses No. 5-8, which can directly connect to cargo terminal No. 2 and the express delivery area, serving the first phase of the airport.

When completed, this system will help the national airline own a synchronous cargo service ecosystem, creating a platform to expand into the Air Cargo sector - large-scale air cargo transport.

In mid-September, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) also proposed establishing an integrated aviation logistics center with a duty-free zone in Long Thanh, with a scale of 136 hectares, located in the southwest of the airport.

According to ACV, this center consists of two components: hardware (terminal infrastructure, warehouse) and software (smart logistics management). When completed, Long Thanh Air Cargo Center will integrate cargo terminal, duty-free zone, smart logistics center, directly connecting Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway and Cai Mep - Thi Vai port, creating a complete transportation network.

Thanks to that, Long Thanh can become a "national cargo gateway", reducing the load on Tan Son Nhat, and at the same time expanding the international transit capacity of the Southeast Asia region.

Not only Long Thanh, Vietnam also has a new bright spot, Vietnam SuperPort™ - a joint venture between YCH Group (Singapore) and T&T Group (Vietnam), introduced at the FIATA World Congress 2025.

The project includes the region’s largest Off-Airport Cargo Terminal, covering an area of 11,000 m² and with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes of cargo per year. This “off-airport cargo terminal” model allows customs clearance, security checks and ULD processing on-site, before transport to the airport, helping to reduce congestion and speed up turnover.

In particular, the system is designed to be multi-modal - directly connecting railways, roads, seaports and airports, forming a "closed transport circle" to help save time and delivery costs.

According to the investor representative, when operating, Vietnam SuperPort will apply AI, robots, autonomous vehicles (AGV) and automatic goods identification systems, helping to increase productivity by 35% and reduce operational errors by 50%.

"This is an important step forward in the direction of smart and low-carbon logistics, in line with the green transformation trend of the region," he said.

With large-scale projects, Vietnam is gradually building a chain of modern cargo centers, creating a foundation for Air Cargo to become a new growth pillar of the aviation industry.

Not only helping to improve national logistics capacity, these centers are also a strategic move to turn Vietnam into an important transit point for goods in Southeast Asia, leading the trend of smart supply chains and sustainable development in the world.
