Many students received notice from their school about switching to online learning while struggling through floods on their way to school.

Early this morning, October 7, due to widespread flooding, a series of universities in Hanoi announced the change of teaching status from in-person to online. However, many students were still crying because they only received the notice when… the incident had already happened.

"I cried when I read this announcement"

After 7 a.m., Đ.NM, a female student at the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, struggled with her motorbike under the overpass, right in front of the school gate, with water up to the gear box. Đ.NM said that her house is in Gia Lam, 22 km from the school, so to be on time for her first class, she has to wake up early every day, leaving home at 5 a.m.

While Đ.NM was walking in the rain, at 6 a.m. the school issued an announcement: "Based on the rainfall situation last night, to ensure absolute safety for lecturers and students in traveling; following the direction of the Board of Directors, the school announced the switch to online all day on Tuesday, October 7."

Not only D.NM, some other students also commented on the school's fanpage with unhappy content, such as "School, why did you only inform me after I got on the bus?", "Next time, can you inform me earlier? I just came from Bac Ninh ", "I cried when I read this announcement"...

On the Hanoi University fanpage, many students also expressed their dissatisfaction when the school announced that "training units can continue teaching and learning online today" at 6:23. Student LTNT exclaimed: "Students waited all night but did not hear anything from the school. My house is far away, I had to get up and leave home at 5:15. Now (7:30) I am still struggling in Cau Giay, not knowing if I can find a coffee shop to study!". Then LTNT expressed his dissatisfaction: "Those who are a little lazy are happy!".

Wait until the water reaches your feet to jump

When a parent advised him to be proactive and flexible in staying home during storms, a student said: "It's not just one rainy and stormy day in Hanoi this season! During storm Bualoi, I already missed one day. If I miss another day, I'll have to pay to retake the class."

The situation is similar at other schools such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, etc. The school only announced the change of teaching and learning status at nearly 7 am. Many students who had already arrived at school chose to continue going to the lecture hall, or go to the library to open their computers to study online, because these universities were not flooded.

But for students on the bus, it was miserable. Some students chose to stay on the bus, ride the bus to the last stop and then turn around, because getting off the bus to catch the opposite bus home when it was still raining outside was not a good solution. Many students said that they "accidentally" got off the bus but then stood still at the bus stop because of the heavy rain and traffic jam, so there was no bus.

According to Thanh Nien 's investigation, most universities in Hanoi announced that students would be off school this morning, at around 6-7am, when the western half of the city was already covered in "water".

Because the announcement was too late, Hanoi University of Science and Technology had to add the following notice: "For classes whose lecturers and students have arrived since shift 1 today, they can proactively choose the form of study."
