This is a decisive stage for hundreds of thousands of candidates. Understanding the virtual filtering process, admission principles and the steps to take after receiving the benchmark scores is a key factor to help candidates avoid unfortunate mistakes, especially the situation of "thinking you passed but then failing" due to lack of information or technical errors.
Understanding the virtual filtering process is the “key” to not missing out on opportunities
From August 13 to 4:30 p.m. on August 20, the Ministry of Education and Training 's admission system conducted 6 virtual filterings of university admission registration data nationwide.
The Ministry of Education and Training's admission support system recorded 849,544 candidates registering for university and college admission in 2025 with a total of 7,615,560 wishes. Thus, on average, each candidate registered nearly 9 wishes.
Each time, the system will remove from the expected admission list candidates who have been admitted to higher choices at other schools. This data helps schools adjust the benchmark scores to match the quota, then continue to send to the system for the next filtering.
By 5 p.m. on August 20, schools must complete entering the benchmark scores and admission lists into the system. This is the key time to determine which candidates will be officially admitted to the first round of 2025.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), affirmed: The Ministry's admission support system ensures that each candidate only passes the highest registered wish. If that wish is not passed, the system will consider the next wish.
A notable new point of the 2025 university and college entrance exam is that there will no longer be an early admission form. All wishes, whether based on high school graduation exam scores or a combination of methods, will be processed simultaneously on the system. This is why experts and teachers always remind candidates to pay special attention to the order of their wishes, because this directly affects their chances of admission.
Tran Minh Duc, a student at Thang Long High School, shared: “I put the International Economics major of the Foreign Trade University on top even though I knew it would be difficult, because if I put it down, I would lose the opportunity if I had passed my previous choice. Understanding the virtual filtering process helps me feel more confident when arranging my wishes and confident in arranging my wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission support system.
The Ministry of Education and Training’s admission support system also has a fair mechanism in case many candidates have the same score at the end of the admission list. In that case, schools can use the order of preferences as a secondary criterion to select suitable candidates.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, a parent of a student at Tien Thinh High School, said: “I used to think that if I registered many wishes, I would definitely get a place. But after careful research, I realized that the order of priority is extremely important. Thanks to the careful advice from experts and teachers at the school, my family is very secure and confident in waiting for the announcement of the admission results.”
Experts still recommend that candidates should closely monitor information from the Ministry of Education and Training and the school during the virtual filtering period. Although the system does not allow changes to wishes at this time, understanding the process will help candidates avoid misunderstandings or unnecessary worries.
What should candidates do after finishing 6 virtual screenings?
After completing the virtual filtering process, from 5:00 p.m. on August 20, universities can begin announcing the admission scores for the first round of university and college admissions in 2025.
The deadline for announcing the benchmark scores is before 5 p.m. on August 22. The next stage is an important time for candidates to take the steps to confirm their admission.

From August 22 to 5:00 p.m. on August 30, candidates must confirm their admission online on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission support system. This is a mandatory step, with no exceptions. If a candidate is admitted but fails to confirm within the prescribed time, the admission result will be canceled.
Pham Hoang My, a student at Nguyen Van Cu High School, shared: “My friend almost failed the admission because he thought he only needed to go directly to the school to apply. Learning from this situation, I will regularly look up the admission support system as well as update information related to the admission process of the Ministry of Education and Training as well as the school I was admitted to so as not to miss any steps.”
After confirming online, candidates need to wait for the school's notification to make direct admission. Each school will have a different schedule, so candidates must closely follow the information on the official website, email or message from the school.
Tran Tuan Anh, a student at Minh Quang High School, shared: “We live quite far from the center, so we are afraid of missing out on information. Therefore, the whole family has a plan. After confirming online admission, all members must follow information from many sources such as the school's website, the Ministry's admission support system, and the registered phone number to know the official admission schedule.”
To ensure the rights of candidates, the Ministry of Education and Training has requested that schools not confirm admission before August 22 or require completion before August 30.
This is a measure to ensure equal rights for all candidates nationwide. Experts note that in case of detecting a school violating regulations, candidates have the right to send feedback to the Ministry or relevant agencies.
After completing the virtual filtering process, candidates need to carefully check their personal information, major, benchmark scores and admission requirements; complete admission confirmation on the system on time; regularly monitor notifications from the school about admission schedules and required documents.
After the first round, from September 1, schools will launch a supplementary admission round, lasting until the end of December 2025. However, only candidates who have not yet confirmed their admission will be able to participate in these rounds. If confirmed, candidates will not be able to withdraw for further admission, unless the school approves their withdrawal for special reasons.
Experts warn that many candidates, after being admitted, find that their major is not suitable, but do not foresee that they will not be considered for additional study. Therefore, they should consider carefully before confirming their admission.
