According to Fox News , Ukraine has received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. This is considered a positive development for Kiev as Ukraine is having to increase imports from US suppliers due to growing concerns about supply in the region.

DTEK, a private Ukrainian energy company, confirmed that it has received the first 100 million m³ of US LNG under a contract signed with Venture Global in June 2024.

This is also the first major contract signed between Ukraine and the US, allowing Kiev to purchase an "unspecified" amount of LNG from Venture Global until 2026.

The positive news came just hours before Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, is expected to stop all gas supplies via Ukrainian pipelines to other European countries after its five-year contract expires.

Ukraine itself does not buy Russian gas. However, the European Union (EU) is still heavily dependent on imported gas, especially from Russia, to prepare for the upcoming cold winter.

Ukrainian officials say they hope additional supplies from the US could help fill the gap and help soften the blow from any EU supply crisis that may arise in the near future.

“Shipments like this not only help the region have flexible and secure energy sources, but also reduce Russia's influence on our energy system,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
