The Phu Quoc special economic zone is one of the localities that is frequently affected by the circulation of storms and tropical depressions. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, the Provincial Border Guard Command has developed a plan and directed border posts and stations on the island to deploy the tasks of natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue to each officer and soldier. Towards the end of the rainy season, the units proactively stick to and grasp the area, implementing the "4 on-site" motto to respond to bad weather; carry out mass mobilization work well, calling on all people and fishermen to join hands.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, resident of Ward 8, Phu Quoc Special Zone, shared: “As a ship owner, I am always aware that when going to sea, I must be fully equipped with life jackets and maritime safety equipment. I regularly study safety instructions during the rainy and stormy season, and strictly comply with local regulations before going to sea: I must have a full communication device, telephone, with installed frequency and direct phone number of the authorities, to receive and respond to all information related to the weather…”.

The Provincial Border Guard Command organizes training sessions to improve the qualifications and capacity of officers, soldiers and people in the work of preventing, combating and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters. The subordinate units develop plans to organize training on the following contents: Swimming, skills, methods of rescuing people at sea, how to use life jackets, life buoys, etc. Each border guard station establishes a mobile team, ready to go to key and vulnerable areas, low-lying areas, coastal areas, etc. to coordinate with localities to guide, help and move people and property out of dangerous areas when there is heavy rain. The units also propose solutions to minimize risks and accidents for fishermen.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Head of Nam Du Border Guard Station informed: "Implementing the direction of the Provincial Border Guard Command on the peak of natural disaster prevention, control, search and rescue at the end of the rainy season, we have seriously organized the implementation. Since the beginning of the year, the unit has prepared human resources, equipment, and vehicles to be ready to mobilize when there is a situation; regularly practicing, creating quick working style and good health for officers and soldiers".

In addition, the work of ensuring information and communication between sea and land is of concern. From the command to the grassroots units, all maintain regular and smooth communication with fishermen, thereby grasping the situation at sea, promptly guiding vehicles to find shelter and safe anchorage when there are storms and tropical depressions. Border control stations strengthen inspections to ensure maritime safety, thereby detecting, correcting and promptly overcoming violations, proposing many solutions on managing ships, boats and fishermen when participating in activities at sea...

Fishermen report the situation via the contact frequency to the 24/24-hour watchtowers of the Provincial Border Guard at the following locations: Tho Chau - An Thoi - Nam Du - Provincial Border Guard Command. Frequency for flood and storm prevention - Search and rescue: 9339 KHZ (day wave) and 6973 KHZ (night wave) or make an emergency call to the number: 02973.862062 Provincial Border Guard Operations. In addition, this number also receives all information related to security, order, smuggling, trade fraud, violations of seafood exploitation, border security, sea and island areas of the province.
