“Life-changing” role - launching pad for young actors

Finding a “life-changing” role is the constant desire of most actors. Some are lucky enough to find their “sweet spot” after a long time of working hard in the arts, but many others still struggle to “shine”.

Choosing the role - courage and luck

The resounding success of Sky Deathmatch with a revenue of 44 billion VND not only marked a boost for Vietnamese cinema, but also a turning point in the careers of many young actors. There, the audience witnessed the clear "transformation" of familiar faces on the big screen, television or web dramas.

Actor Thanh Son, although he has acted in many films, has not made an impression. However, with the role of guard Binh, he has made experts and audiences re-evaluate his acting ability. Actor Loi Tran, who has been acting for about 10 years, has participated in many films: Lat mat 2 - Phim truong, Giao lo 8675, Phuong khau, Bi long dai ca... but it was the role of Hai that truly affirmed his maturity in the profession.

Similarly, Vo Dien Gia Huy - the 9X actor who was once known for his gentle, innocent image in Dear Mom, I'm Going, now surprised the audience with his thorny villain image, his eyes filled with murderous intent. Likewise, the names Tram Anh, Ray Nguyen, Tran Ngoc Vang... also had very different performances.

Equally noteworthy, Red Rain - the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time, also shows the resilience of a new generation of actors. Do Nhat Hoang, once considered a "discovery" from Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story, then lost in Mai, or the TV series You Can't Escape Me, suddenly shone with the image of the music conservatory student Cuong.

Steven Nguyen, who was previously only considered an actor in “web dramas” or TV series such as “Big Brother Bi Long”, “Hung Long Phong Ba”, “Stolen Happiness”, “My Girlfriend is the School Boss”, “Steel Fist”, “Winter Sun”… has suddenly “changed his life” with the role of Quang.

It would be a mistake not to mention Phuong Nam - the beloved "Squad Leader Ta" in the movie Red Rain. He made an impression with the role of Binh Tu in Cau Vang, or participated in many TV series: Hoa Hong Giay, Nha Minh La Lam, Tinh Tinh: Da Kiem, Dui Bong Cay Hanh Phuc... but it was not until Red Rain that he truly became a household name.

In addition to the two projects mentioned above, Vietnamese cinema in 2025 also witnessed many actors finding roles that were “tailor-made” for themselves. Lam Thanh My got rid of the “baby acting” label to play the role of a wife and mother for the first time with complex and multi-dimensional psychological developments in The Bride Sale Contract. Or with Sy Toan, through his villainous roles in Detective Kien: Headless Mystery and Death Battle in the Sky, he was “remembered by name” by the audience.

Success does not come naturally

According to actor Thanh Son, the role of guard Binh in Death Battle in the Sky is the first time he has tried his hand at action films. “The role of Binh is a big challenge and change for me personally,” Thanh Son admitted. He won over the audience with his natural acting, his surprising transformation in both action scenes and complex psychological scenes.

Similarly, actor Loi Tran said that audiences are familiar with him through action roles, but this time it is more special because the audience can also see him delve deeply into the psychology of his characters. As for Vo Dien Gia Huy - to have realistic and breathtaking action scenes, he and his crew had to calculate carefully to ensure both safety and create realistic effects for the audience.

The transformation of young actors shows that they are proactive in finding roles, not afraid of challenges and ready to “renew” themselves. In the context of Vietnamese cinema recovering and developing strongly, a serious working attitude is the factor that helps them create a personal mark in a vibrant market.

Before shining in Red Rain, Do Nhat Hoang made an impression when playing a mentally retarded young man in Co Don't Dream of Escaping Me. Or actor Hieu Nguyen, who was associated with villainous roles in Huong Ga and Vo Dien Sat Nhan, also surprised when taking on the role of upright and calm Lieutenant Colonel Tran Thanh.

A superficial role can make the audience forget it immediately, and can even be considered a step back. On the contrary, a right choice, even if it is just a small role, can still open up a long path. Because for an actor, they do not just act but also have to truly live with the character to reach sublimation in the profession.
