Venezuela sends two planes to the US to bring deported citizens back home

(CLO) Venezuela has deployed two flights to bring citizens deported from the US back to the country, after reaching an agreement with the administration of President Donald Trump.

According to an announcement from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on February 10, two planes carried about 190 people back to the country.

The Venezuelan government said that some of those deported were suspected of having links to the Tren de Aragua gang and other criminal groups. Venezuelan authorities will conduct further investigations into the matter.

"Venezuela affirms that the transport of citizens must always be carried out with absolute respect for human dignity and rights," the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The White House also posted on social media X images of people handcuffed and boarding a Venezuelan Conviasa plane. "Repatriation flights to Venezuela have resumed and Richard Grenell oversaw the first two flights. Making America safe again," the White House wrote.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had earlier agreed with President Donald Trump's special envoy Richard Grenell to take in illegal migrants and provide transportation. After a visit to Caracas, special envoy Grenell returned to the United States with six citizens detained in Venezuela.

Although it is not clear what conditions Venezuela has achieved after the agreement with the US, President Maduro has called for a "new beginning" in relations between the two countries.

Previously, on January 10, Mr. Maduro was sworn in for a third presidential term, but the US government did not recognize his election victory.

The Maduro administration has criticized sanctions from the United States and other countries, saying they are illegal measures and an economic war aimed at paralyzing Venezuela.
